Does anyone know what a full choke 16 guage barrel should measure for constriction? The reason I ask is; I just picked one up and upon further inspection it looks like the last couple of inches of the bore has been reemed at one time.

Thanks,

Ryan

"Full choke" in a 16 gauge could be anywhere from 0.032 inches of constriction to 0.047 inches, essentially the same as for a 12 gauge. In order to measure it properly you must know the bore diameter about 9 inches back from the muzzle as well as the muzzle diameter. Not all barrels will be the same diameter. While the nominal bore diameter of the 16 gauge is 0.663 inches, examples can be found with as little as 0.655 inches up to 0.680 or so. Patterning on paper is the only way to know what the effective choke of a barrel is. If you suspect that the choke has been reamed, then patterning is the first thing you should do.

Thanks for the info Sharptail,

It holds a nice tight pattern with high brass #4's & #6's it's marked full but I would say someone had it opened up to shoot steel. I will check for sure with bore mic.

Get a 16 Ga bore gauge and it will make it. It is unexpensive and quite "accurate". You can also use a simple caliper if you're careful enough to don't scratch the bore. Take many measurement, until you get a constant reading.
