Hello all,
I just picked up a savage 775a 16 guage shottie, i have taken out with small game hunting and i must say i adore it. I am wondering if anyone has some info on it, particularly how tell what the choke is, there is nothinng written on the barrel. The only out of place mark i found was a star punched into the side of the barrel. When i shot it to figure out the pattern i end up with a 3 to 4 inch whole in the papper at about 25 feet with 7.5 shot (i am guessing it must be full choked). My next question is does anyone have info on the 16 guage shell itself? i like it allot and it has almost no recoil. I am also wondering for those who have used it in the field if this is too much shotgun for bunnies and partridges?

thanks for anyhelp.

You have a great old shotgun. The one star indicates a full choke. I shoot 1oz Remington games loads out of my 16's and they work great. It is a near perfect upland gauge. It is not overpowered for any game if the right size shot is used. Like I said 1oz gameloads in #6 will knock down any bird or bunny. (no ducks of course due to steel mandate) Enjoy!

That'll be a great upland game gun, even better if you open the choke to IC or so. It's likely a full choke gun as it is, but it might be best to have a gunsmith measure it. Or do a proper patterning analysis at 40 yards into a 30-inch circle.

I believe it's an aluminum/alloy receiver on that model.

Thanks guys, i will do the proper patterning next week, i have some range time set aside. From what i could tell she is all steel. I Hope monday and tuesday i can go hunting again i just became a member of a hunting culb in the area, so i know have 1300 ackers to hunt small and big game on. After shooting it i know why they call the 16 guage the sweet 16 they really are.
