What do you guys think of a 16" M4 Style AR15 barrel for service rifle?
1/7 twist, 5.56/.223 Wylde chamber

Cheers,
The Prof.

My 16" midlength Armalite does it for me.... Both Service Rifle and Service CQB. Buy what works for you and also the LCV (look cool value) since I AM a Mirror Kommando! :ar15: yuk yuk yuk

The 1-12 service rifle program is mostly a shooters game IMO. One windier days, a 20 inch would have an advantage. For guys with lighter frames, a 10.5 would have advantages on most of the course. If you are buying a rifle for the course, I reccomend checking out the rigs at one of the matches. If you are in Calgary, you'd be able to see/try much of the gear before you buy.

A 16 inch mid length seems to do quite well in the hands of a number of conpetitors. When I shoot, I am less then 5% away using a 20inch, 16inch middy, or my 308 bolt action hunting rig. I can't say I am very good at the game, but the fact that gear has such a little impact on my scores says run what you brung.

You would be severely disadvantaged using a 10.5 incher in the traditional 1-12 matches if you were looking to be in the top portion of the winners board. However it would still be a gas!
If you are serious about winning then a 16 or a 20 should do you fine.If it were me I'll take the 20 incher every time.

I have a 20" and a 14.5". I've used both but when I am serious about shooting a good score instead of having a blast..I use the 20" barrel.

Of course you can shoot Service Rifle with any barrel length.
Will you be shooting recreationally, or do you intend to be competitive? What do the top shooters use?
No harm in the Wylde chamber, it is a good design and works well.
I suppose the barrel comes with the 1:7 twist. No reason to select that as first choice, for the bullets you will be shooting in SR. Probably won't hurt, but it is certainly not needed.
If you are serious about getting the best accuracy out of your rifle, get a quality barrel. Like any other rifle, a quality barrel really contributes to accuracy.
Given a dependable optic and a decent rifle, conditionning and practice make the most difference in SR shooting.
Its January, the shooting will start in a few months, are you training?
