Can anyone here offer some insight as to which round has better results out to and beyond 600m with a .308?

I know lots are using the 154gr Lapua Scenar out to 1000 but I have also heard several shooters, much more experience in reloading, explain that the 167gr Lapua Scenar does tend to do better when reaching out. Better center of gravity than the 154gr Lapua Scenar. Is it harder to keep the 167 gr fast enough to get out to 1000m?

I'm already using Lapua Brass, Fed 210m Large rifle match primers, and will continue to play with Varget or Vitavouri powder.

My rifle is an HS Precision Pro2000 .308, with 1:12 twist barrel.

Thanks :)

Although I shoot only 154s, because of TR rules, I expect that the 167s should be just fine out to 1000y. It is the 168SMK that has problems, because of its design. 175s and heavier are routinely used at long range, out of .308s. You will have to experiment to see which is more accurate in your rifle, and if the 167s have a wind advantage for you.

since the 155 Scenar has a higher BC and a higher muzzle velocity (pressure being equal), it will give you a higher downrange velocity, less wind drift, etc

BC of 155 Scenar is .508, compared to .470 for the 167 Scenar

To save some $$$ you might want to start using regular Fed primers as opposed to the match ones. Last I heard, the benefit of match in Fed primers was a visual QA check.

Joe

PS - don't forget about the Bergers BT and VLDs....

I just had an encouraging PM from a fellow CGN member suggesting Berger 175gr VLD. Anyone care to jump in here and explore this round?? Joe, you out there??

I am new to reloading long range precision rounds and have been schooled thus far in 168gr smk, which has its fair share of pitfalls. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Another question while I'm at it is this,

From what I have been reading rounds like the Berger VLD and Lapua Scenar like to be engaged with the lands and tend to have the best results when seated as such. I noted the Berger website suggests .010 to direct contact. What kind of experience have most of you had as far as these rounds loading from your magazine. Mine is magazine fed and I would hate to turn it into a single shot.

Also, is it better to Chamfer/Ream the case mouth with a 22 degree Chamfer/Reamer rather than the standard 45 degree unit with VLD bullets?? I understand there is far less deformation while seating at 22 degrees.

Thanks again for all the imput. The more I learn, the more questions I have.

With the VLD bullets I use a 22 degree chamfer tool.
I load pretty close or right into the lands.

About the only bullet in so cal I use is the 155 Palma bullet by Seirra, and the 155 ULD Alberta Wildcat, becuase I use Palma rifles mostly, but I also us the heavier bullets in my 300WSM long range rifle, I don't shoot it very much however...

I have seen the 155gr Scenars do some amazing things at 1000m so will suggest you start there. Why put up with more recoil then you have to anyways.

There really is no right answer so test a variety of bullets to see what works be for you and your rifle. However, I have had the most success with the 155gr class of bullet in the 308's I have shot.

As long as the finished cartridge has little to no runout, you can tweak for max accuracy by using powder alone. I have done that with several rifles I feed from the mag with excellent LR success.

These light 308 bullets are pretty stubby when compared to other VLD bullets. You should not need to jam them into the lands to shoot if willing to do some careful load development.

The shooter I saw using these Lapuas fed from a Sako. Launched three rds in less then 1 min and dropped them into a 7" group at 1000m. I would say they can be made to work.

Umm, i just surfed Berger's site, and those 185 and 190grainers are apealing, even though a bit on the heavy side

The 175 VLD 30cals perform extremely well.

Keep in mind, the higher bc bullets are llike buying insurance. If you screw up on gauging the wind they help minimize the wind effect.

How about the Berger 168gr match bt?? How do they compare to the VLD'S. I realize that the loaded 175gr VLD's will not fit in the mag of my rifle. For shoots where I require mag feed, does the 168gr Match BT perform well?? Should be more affected by wind yes?
