copied this from another site and i figured some here might be interested. i can only imagine what kinda mess it would make of small game if it were an accurate round....
Probably belongs on Centerfire form but. I was reloading last night and ran across 13 .25/06 sabots as I loaded them years back. Was going to trash them but got to thinking .17/06 ? I went to lathe and turned down some nylon sabots that fit inside the .25 sabots then bored them out to .17. I cut up 12 .17 cases and salvaged the .17 gn.bullets. I loaded 6 rounds with 49 gns. of 4064 and 6 rounds with 65 gns. of 4831 and seated them in .30-06 cases.At the range today I got 4325 fps avg. with load 1 and 4245 avg. with load 2.No primer cratering but the best group at 50 yds. was 4.73". I don't think the twist rate was fast enough and it was windy.Also had some traces of un-bernt powder with load 2,guess not enough bullet weight.O well was fun anyway. I never got great groups with the .25-06 ether. Really a waste of time but that's the fastest I have ever got a bullet to move.
