I haven't seen any mention of it so maybe I'll start. Picked up a Savage Bmag a couple of years ago and haven't looked back since. The WSM 2600 or 3000 fps has me driving tacks at 100 m. Just a plain fun gun. Not a lot of Gohers around here and all I can say, lucky for them.;)

I have one as well, it is ndeed quite efficient on the gophers, though i need to get used to the differnet POI at 30 yards or 60 yards or 120, i gotta to get out with it more, cant say driving tacks, but about 1" to 1.5" groups at 100 yards depending on the wind and how im shooting that day, ive shot paper at 100 more often then gophers though as well.

The 17wsm is one rimfire that I never seriously considered. I just can't justify spending as much on ammunition, as it costs me to load my 17Hornet, only to end up with inferior ballistics.

^I'm in the same boat. I'm slightly curious, but accuracy reports I read early on weren't overly inspiring. My .223 is a very accurate rifle, hand loads about $.75 a round +/-...so for me, everything gets measured against that value. However, I realize not everyone is into reloading.

I do have a 17HMR, and a 17M2 that I'm very fond of (both HB Marlin 917s)..but they're likely the only 17s I'll be playing with in the foreseeable future.

I thought about getting one, but truth be told almost all of my shooting is done at under 50 yards and with 'quiet' ( subsonic) ammunition. If I need something that wil reach out farther, there's plenty of faster 22 LR ammunition available.I already have a couple of 22 mag that I don't shoot,so buying a .17 while intriguing, just didn't justify the expense. But that's just me and my situation, obviously others have other needs.I think if I needed to step up a notch,I'd get a .223

Love the 17 hmr, one of my new $ savings at the range. 100 yards quarter size groupings. Bipod makes up for my lack in skill

I'd like to see a 20 cal or another 25 caliber come out. I thought about the 17 hornet but I have no real use for anything in 17 faster than my mach2. The hmr is hard enough on edible game and it's cost is almost doubled since it came out. I already have a 22 mag and may pick up another stainless savage heavy barrel

I think the 17 mach 2 is the most useful if you hunt with them and wish to eat what you shoot. The faster ones are more graphic if just wacking crows or groundhogs

I drank the B-Mag Kool-Aid also and bought one also shortly after they were introduced. Tried a few boxes of 20 & 25gr ammo and am satisfied +- 1" groups at 100 yards. Mine now sits in a Boyd's rim fire Hunter stock and wears a Redfield Revolution 4-12 scope. Might try to whack a coyote with it next.

Hey y'all. Recently discovered .17HMR watching freedomofabird's YouTube channel. Dude is nailing rabbits between 200-300 yards with them and they seem to pack a better punch than .22LR for small game so I am intrigued. Any recommendations for mid-level (quality/cost wise) rifle chambered in .17HMR? Pros and cons versus .22LR? As well; I am a noob in terms of hunting, so for getting into small game pews would it be better to stick with a bolt action or a semi-auto for prompt follow-ups? Any and all info is appreciated!

Stick with a bolt action no matter what caliber. :) (you'll get the best accuracy that way, especially in a mid-level gun)

"Mid level" is subjective though. Unless you want a CZ varmint model (around $600) you're probably looking at a Marlin or a Savage. I'm not a huge fan of Savage rimfires but I have 2 buddies with Savage model 9317 TR, both are lasers. My personal 17HMR is an older Marlin 917 with an aftermarket trigger. I think I paid about $275 for it. It was made before Remington bought Marlin. If I ever had to replace it, I'd search-out the exact same model.

Pros/cons vs. .22? Most people here could write an essay here. There is no comparison really. 17HMR is way faster, flatter shooting, generally more accurate than any 22 in the same price range. etc. Only downsides are the cost of 17HMR ammo, and how destructive it can be on small game you plan on eating. Also, some 17HMRs (like my old CZ452) shot the 20 gr. hollow points best, my Marlin shoots the 17gr. ballistic tips best. I use mine for gophers out west, so the 17gr. ammo really shines on those things. It's a GREAT caliber, but expensive if all you plan on doing is target shooting with the stuff. When I pay that much extra for ammo, it needs to have a hunting/pesting purpose. At least for me.

Get one...and see what all the fuss is about! :)

My brother bought one when they first came out, (blued spaghetti barrel version) and bought a few cases of ammo (one of each grain) and slapped it into a Boyds laminate thumbhole stock and scoped it.

It`s fun to shoot and seems pretty accurate ,although I did not do a hard and true test on grouping ,mostly plinking clay targets.I`m not sure if it`s because the rifle is the first generation or the rotary mag,but it have feeding issues.

I myself bought the Walking Varmiter 25 in .17 Hornet and put her in a Boyds tacktical hunter stock (or whatever it`s called) and scoped it with a Vortex. That SOB is a joy to shoot and super accurate !

I also have a .17HMR ,.17HM2 and Remington in .17 Fireball.

Yes indeed, I have a thing for those little 17 buggers ! LOL

The B-Mag is totally different to a 22 - no need for comparison there. I have used mine for a couple of years - 20gr vs 25gr have different poi. Just putting a Boyd stock on (the recycled milk jug stock is blamed for accuracy problems). It grenades varmints - longest distance for a gopher is 175m or so

I like the 17s as well with Coopers in 17Mach2, 17HMR, 17Hornet, and 17 Fireball.

I see a lot of critique comes from the HMR. That was first gen and there where some problems. Even read something about the shell jackets splitting. I'm sure it has been solved but my gun is the Bmag heavy barrel in stainless. That's Winchester Super Magnum not the HMR. Whole new can o beans. And compared to my 308 or 762 ammo costs, or my 44 mag for that matter, I just don't see going broke on the cost.
