I`ve been out shooting gophers quite frequently the last month. Been using a Sako in .17 remington, it`s always been a tack driver. I have been using Hornady 20g V-Max`s in my reloads but I switched to Berger 25g match grade Varmint bullets because the local gun store ran out of the Hornady`s. Now this may sound strange..but the Berger bullets are not reaching the gophers at all...they disintegrate and fall to pieces about 100 yds out. Weirdest thing I`ve ever seen. The load I`m using is: 27.5g of winchester 760. Anybody else heard of this??

I have a 17 Rem in a Rem Model 700 and I was thinking about trying the Berger bullets, now I am wondering if I should. I am interested in your findings on this one, you wouldn't think that the bullets would disintegrate considering that they were made for 17 Rem velocities.
Hornady now makes 25 grain V-Max bullets as well, I have seen them on American sites but I don't know if they are in Canada yet.

thought I was shooting blank reloads till a friend came along and watched with binoculars. He could`nt believe it either!!! The varmint bullets have a very large and delicate looking hollow point, I guess they just spin themselves apart?...don`t know. I`m definately going back to Hornady`s.

A friend had the same problem with some custom 6.5 bullets, only his disintegrated just before making the target at 800 yards. This only happened with a fouled barrel.

The specs I used say it should be around 3850fps, I would have thought they should handle that but they obviously don`t. I guess I`ll have to find more 20g V-Max`s somewhere..they handle everthing I`ve ever loaded behind them. Thanx!

Are you using a chrony ? I wouldn't give up on the Bergers just yet; they are usually excellent bullets.
