Anyone using a bolt on .17 barrel onna 10-22?

A while back, I recalll seeing several different outfits offering 17Mach2 or 17HMR barrels for the Ruger semi's, but then heard a little bit about "issues" that required heavier bolts, and springs sorta stuff.

What's the report from the firsthand types?

Pondering seeking out a .17 barrel for giggles, and wondering if it'd be a waste of time or not.

Sadly, most kits I saw were not exported to Canada from the US.

I've got one on my 10-22 that I changed over a couple years back,
the only advice I'd give is get something around 16" if you want to swap to .17 Mach 2.
I went with a 20" and had a lot more tweaking to do to fight the dreaded casehead rupture from premature extraction (the longer barrel has a pressure curve of a longer duration and screws up the timing)

There's piles of info on rimfirecentral.com, I'd suggest reading a *lot* before considering doing it (I damn near shat myself the first time I had a casehead rupture)

On the plus side, when we go out shooting gophers I'm finding it boringly accurate to the point that I'm regularly trying to tag them from 100-150 yards
just for the hell of it ;)

Strriker66,

I'm actually considering whether the barrels may be a reasonable source to use for another project, and wondering if there are many about the place, as well as what the general results were when they were used as is.

'Course I may end up using one on a 10-22, anyways.

Loud, was it? :)

Hmm, dare I ask what kind of project you're looking to build? ;)

I was thinking of picking up a cheap :runaway: MK I or something
and rebarelling it as a .17 Mach 2 :D

And yes it was loud, something like standing next to someone
shooting off a 9mm without earplugs :p
Not to mention the strange sensation of the mag being forcibly ejected
out the bottom and seeing the next several rounds mangled and dented ;)

Hmm, dare I ask what kind of project you're looking to build? ;)

I'm looking at the possibility of a .17 Ackley Hornet on a small Martini action.

I was figuring that there was a realistic likelihood that one of the .17 aftermarket barrels could be dug up as a source for a suitable blank.

Still in the plotting stages with this one...:D Dunno if I'll go .17, or .22 on it. Depends what I can scrounge up.

I'd love to see a .17M2 barrel on a Cooey...:)

That's actually not that tough to pull of, if you don't mind going the reline route.

One shot to heck Cooey, one liner, one reamer, and 8mm long(!) shank drill, and some Acraglass.

All she wrote!

We are in the process of setting up to import a superb line of 10-22 bolt-on barrels that will include both HMR and Mach 2 chambering. (as well a 22RF) These will be availbale in stainless or Chromoly and will be available in a number of contours for the 10-22 and we will even offer fluting as an option.

I expect these to be available for well under $200.

STay tuned
