I am looking to buy a 17 rem or preferably a 17 fireball, but as far as I can tell Remington is the only company to chamber them. I've got nothing against Remingtons, but the few I've found chambered in 17 fireball just don't turn my crank. Do any other manufacturers make a heavy barrel, laminate stock bolt action varmint rifle in either of these rounds? Or does Remington make one that isn't plastic with a triangular barrel? I do reload but am not interested in any of the other 17 wildcats.

If you have the money look at the coopers. If you want one for cheap you have no real choice but the Remingtons. If I'm not mistaken they made the CDL and the VLS in .17.

You could also build off a savage action for pretty cheap. $400 for a stevens, sell the barrel for $60. $350 for a match grade barrel and $95 for a Boyds laminated stock. Add a barrel nut wrench and headspaces gauges, maybe a timney trigger and you can get a sweet rifle for under $1000.

I was in the same boat and ended up buying a Cooper. I was going to build a Savage, but was impatient. Pretty hard to complain about a Cooper, other than not having more of them.

My own Varminter laminated Cooper in 17 Rem is a jewel and never shot over .5, if you can, you will have a rifle of great accuracy with unmatched craftmanship. My favorite and most accurate load is a zippy one 20 grs hdy v-max 25 grs h-4895 primer rem 7.5 oal 2,175, 4400 fps , .175 average 5 shot groups... Cheers. JP.

Any .222/.223 can be barrelled with a quality stainless .17 barrel and out shoot most factory .17's by a fair margin... that's always an option if you can't find what you want in a factory rifle.

As Guntech said....
A chap in Saskatoon took a tired 788 Rem in 223 and swapped a 17 rem stainless factory barrel on it with no other changes. The 223 factory mags function perfectly. I added a Ram-line stock and Presto... a 1/4"MOA tackdriver for a very modest investment.

Thanks for all the advice everybody. I'm a savage fan anyways so I think I'll go the 223 re-barrelled route.I love Coopers - my buddy has a 270 that's a real tackdriver- But to spend $1600-$2000 on a gopher gun don't leave me a lot of cash for a scope, and a fine cooper rifle deserves better than a tasco.
