I've got a Savage in .17HMR and seem to find it shoots the 20 grain round far more accurate then the 17 grain. Anyone else find their .17 to be ammo finicky or am I alone on this?

I have only tried the .17 Grain Hornady through mine and it has shot so well that I don't have the need to try anything else.

Great city you live in by the way. Born and raised there, just moved about 2.5yrs ago.

I have never tried a 20 grain, but I did try almost every other brand of the 17 stuff. I found that there was a huge difference in accuracy, the worst in my gun was the Horandy, I still have 3 boxes of it that will never see my rifle.
Mine seems to prefer the Remington.

I tried every brand I could find. Remington, Hornady, etc. and still I get 2" groups at 100 with any of the 17 grains and under an inch with the Hornady 20grain XTP ammo. Its not a big deal as its only .50-1.00$ more a box but most places don't carry the 20 grain so I tend to stock up when I find it. Got about 500 rounds of it right now as we're moving into varmint season.

Tired many brands of ammo for the .17HMR.

Rifle is a Henry Varmint Express. Using the cantilever mount with a Bushnell 1.25x4.5 scope, works great!

It does well with Remington Accutip-V, CCI FMJ/TNT, Hornady VMax, Federal V-Shock VMax/TNT, - all under 1"@100m. It absolutely did not like the Hornady XTP, the groups are all over the map! Very nice rifle, handles well, wanted a Winchester 94/17, but couldn't find one, heard they are rare and pricey!

my savage thumbhole is exactly the same

Mine fouls up really fast with any other ammo but 20grain XTP

CCI Vmax, CCI 20grain FMJ, CCI 20 grain gameshock, CCI TNT, Federal Vmax, Federal FMJ all shoot ok for the first few shots then I loose all accuracy

I have a CZ 452 American in 17 HMR, and it shoots everything I feed it quite well. However, the 20 grain XTP hornady is positively the best! It shoots tiny little bugholes at 50 and well under 1 moa at 100 if I do my part. Best ammo in this rifle so far. I laid in a bit because it is so good. Regards, Eagleye.

20gr vs 17gr is and increase of weight by 15% is that could help this tiny bullet fight the wind I thinks so . so maybe (not enought testing done yet) I think 20gr could also give you a chance to get better group by windy condition?

I have two Savages in 17 hmr. Black synthetic/blued barrel with standard trigger and a Thumbhole laminated/SS w/Accutrigger. Black one will shoot anything well. Both seem to like the Hornady 17 g vmax the best. The only other brand I've shot a lot of is the Winchester 17gr poly tips. The thumbhole didn't like it much.
