I am looking at buying a .17 hmr just to play with at 300 yds. I have only shot big cal. and am unsure about getting a little cal for this kind of distance. Any advice? Do we have enough accurancy at that kind of distance for satisfaction?

Thanks all.

Well I have 3 of these little guys, and they are a hell of a lot of fun!!!
One is the Marlin HB SSL, the other tha Thumb hole savage Target moddle and a Handi rifle i picked up years ago when they first cam out.

At 50 yards you can shoot flys off paper with them, at 100 yards no wind you can shoot 3/4 to 1/2 pending the ammo it varries even box to box, and lot to lot, at 200 no wind I have shot under 2 inch goups.

WIND TEH WORST ENEMY OF THESE

100 yards 10 MPH wind groups go to 1 inch plus maybe 2 depends how i read the wind
300 yards I have shot on a windy day its Feet brother it will move!!!

Great gun to learn the wind.

A bit to light for Yotes, works great on Hogs to 200 yards!

have fun with it, they are great little cartridges.

You will be quite supprized on a calm day what they will do!

I should add this cartridge is at the end of its head of steam at 300 yards!!

It will group, but i have not had great results, winter, summer, spring or fall at that distance and can be a challange to hit a tin can out at that distance if there is a slight wind!

I could consistently hit a milk carton (2L) size rock at 275 yards last spring.

At 220 yards, you can shoot a clay pigeon, then selectively shoot the shards to smithereens. Wind is an issue, but for a gopher sized game it is deadly accurate and hard hitting.

At 300 yards, they're going to be a little frustrating.

If you want a paper puncher or a 150 yard gopher gun, they are awesome. If you want to do some precision 300 yard shooting, any of the centerfire .22's are a much better choice.
