17 HMR .. opinions on the round, and where to buy.

Ruger RPR in 17hmr is the best gun. Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 is best scope choice for the caliber, preferably the plain duplex reticle.

A17 ammo
Tikka T1x 17hmr 20” barrel and CZ 455 Varmint
100 meters
3/4” or less consistently with 5 rds

I was slow to get on the 17 hmr band wagon and relied on the 22lr and 223 for varminting. After a couple years with the 17 now, I leave the other two cartridges at home! Great little round! Instant performance on gophers unlike the 22lr some times, and much safer with minimal ricochets and over penetration unlike the 223.

A CZ 452 will blow the doors off most rifles chambered in .17hmr.
Hornady ammo and gophers to not stand a chance as far as you can see them (with trigger time and experience)
Coyotes out to 165 yrds from someone local to me , but as always others will have a different opine.
Crappy Tire if you watch for sales or clearance otherwise the Banner Sponsors will have stock to choose from and sometimes it aint cheap.

My CZ 452 Varmint HMR shoots all the brands ok, it really likes the TNT stuff, and likes the Federal vmax. Ammo is overpriced however. Gopher and chicken Laser Beam!

Mine is a heavy barrel savage 93 with a cabelas 3-12 rimfire scope. Shoots almost anything well but cci tnt gives the best groups by far. At 100 yards a 1" group is pretty easy to get consistently.

I expressed an interest in a members Savage 93 in .17hmr last year, relying on ammo prices from the last LeBaron catalogue in 2016 ( on sale for about $14.00/box ).Then I saw that the prices were now averaging well above $20/box.

I apologized to the gentleman for wasting his time by not knowing how pricey the ammo had become. It seems there are better deals in bulk purchasing the CCI A17's and the Federal byob jars, but you may have to pay shipping charges if they're not available locally.

Savage 93r17 stainless steel barrel
5 shot groups about an inch at 100 meters
Ammo is a bit expensive but your saving tons on the rifle compared to the others so that frees up some cash.
I have about 400 rounds for my Savage 93r17 it shoots very well

.17 hmr

Started the .17 shooting with a 457 MTR , Beauty of a rifle.

Stepped up to Cooper Varminter , made me forget all about .22 lr.

The 200 mtr range is where the HMR shines , I use Hornady 17 gr
V-MAX in both rifles, it will be an improvement when
a manufacturer comes out with a Match grade ammunition.

Btw in normal times buying isn't a big issue. You can find 16/box sales pretty often. Just like everything else i doubt you will find that price now.

My 455 Canadian shoots almost everything super accurately; point of impact moves up or down depending on the type of ammo.

Only one I would stay away from is Federal; a half dozen guys at our club found it not only terrible for accuracy, but frequently had split cases. So did I. No other ammo did this.

The 455 is as good as any and better than most IMO.

I’ve got a Ruger 77/17hmr. Has VX3 6.5-20 scope on top. It shoots any 17 or 20 grain to near same point of aim and groups within a nickel. The only ammo I haven’t much luck with is the Hornady 15.5 NTX ammo. Shot a couple inches off center and grouped a shade over an inch in the Ruger.
Any 17gr ammo shot lights out and groups very well. Ymmv

I own an Anschutz 1717 (medium barrel 17 HMR) bolt action repeater that is easily the most accurate rifle at 100 meters that I presently own. It has been a favorite gun for many staff members at our informal staff shoots (sadly not last year). It came with a ten shot 100 meter test target that was sub 1/2 inch group. My personal experience has been with multiple manufacturers of 17 HMR with similar results. Phil.
