17 hmr Scope input

Hi to all,

Years ago I bought a 17 hmr to see if I liked precision shooting before investing in a long range rifle.
I did like long range shooting so I sold it and bought a 308 which I sold recently due to limited space to shoot.
Its been 3 years in a row that I'm going up north to hunt white partridge and sometime I've wished to have a 17 hmr to shoot them in the head a longer ranges.

I've had a savage in the past I tried the CZ canadian edition of my friend in 22 mag and that's what I want but in 17 hmr.
I saw top 10 rimfire scopes and all, now I'd like to have your input on scopes for this specific caliber.
The main criteria would be a magnification of 3-12+ i.e. no 3-9.
Budget around 300$

Yes especially since I tried 22lr but it makes quite a bit hole,, to headshot chickens efficiently I've realized the 12ga works just fine so 17hmr seems a good choice.
What scopes you'd recommend for what I assume would be a higher price range?
 
Last scope I bought in that price/mag range was a Sightron S1, 4-12, AO. It's been a great gopher scope so far, and bright/clear glass for the $ if you ask me. Not sure if an AO scope is good for hunting chickens, but gophers will give you a little time to adjust for various ranges. :)

I was not meaning to imply that you needed a higher end scope, sorry about that. If I had imgur going, I could show you a headshot on one of my eaten chickens, that little .17 TNT went right through its retina, no joke!! As far as scope, mine has a 6-24 old Bausch and Lomb, but I feel that it would be best with a smaller bottom end as in the trees it is hard to find them sometimes, or seems dark. My 6.5 needs a Nifgtforce SHV, and so does my HMR, but its just not in the budget. I would try a 4-12 cheaper Vortex maybe as the bdc can be useful, and if it dies, its not ruining an epic sheep hunt. I have a Bushnell elite 3200 3-9, very bright but 9 power magnification is too low I feel. I do see a Bushnell elite 3500 4-12 AO on sale at wholesalesports for $384.00 with the DOA reticle. I think it would be a decent choice.

No worries I understood you had other recommendation with higher prices. I generally go with the 50% rule i.e. a scope needs to be at least 50% of the rifle value.
That's why 300$ is the budget I chose but I'm always considering other options regardless of price.
That bushnell 3500 seems nice but I'll never buy from wholesalesport ever again, I do compare their prices and use it negociate with Bullseyelondon or Cabelas so the can beat their prices.
 
I'm in the same boat except for I'm upgrading the glass on my 17 mach 11.
It's between sightron s1 or Bushnell legend ultra hd. I'm really liking my ultra hd scopes on my other guns
