I noticed a recall regarding this in a gun shop the other day, and haven't had much luck finding out why on this site or via google. Why is .17 hmr apparently dangerous in semi-autos? I'm just curious...

Thanks.

I know the Remington 597 in .17HMR was recalled. It sometimes fires out of battery. I fired a few hundred rounds out of one of the first in Canada a few years back and didn't notice anything weird.

Volquartsen makes .17 HMR semiautos that don't kaboom. They are certainly pricey, though.

Cool, I was thinking maybe it was something inherent in the cartridge - I didn't know it was a problem just with the one rifle.

Thanks.

I personally have only heard of the 597 being recalled but last time I was on their website I read this:

http://www.remington.com/pages/news-and-resources/safety-center/safety-warning-recall-notice.aspx

Remington makes it sound like the physical cartridge isn't suited for semi-auto rifles based on the first and third lines...

Dont think its just one rifle its more the cartridge isnt suited for Semis.

Ruger had one they didn't produce or very limited, Remington is recalling theirs, Magnum Research is having issues.

Ammo manufacturers have issued notices.

Obviously there has been some major problems/issues.

Most manufacurers who tried a semi 17HMR have either recalled the product or cancelled the product development due to the pressure issue of the cartidge itself in a self loading platform to function reliably and safely. Ruger tried to adapt their 10/22 mag and not only cancelled the project but stopped production on the 10/22 mag well (this was always a problematic rifle even after adding the second extractor). Companies like Volquartsen hand build their guns and can tune each one to work properly. We have had Magnum Research (10/22 mag/17 HMR) knock offs on order for well over a year and I think the non delivery speaks volumes about not getting the gun to reliable. Some manufacturers of 17HMR specificly warn about not using their ammo in semi auto 17's. Phil.
