I have been looking at videos of the 17 HMR on the internet and have been impressed by what it can do to a gopher and since my next gun will be for this purpose only i was wondering what everyones opinion on them was. Also whats the big diffrence between 17 HMR and 17 Mach 2?? The reason i ask is because i found some 17 mach 2 for cheaper than the 17 HMR. I am worried about draining my rimfire ammunition budget on 17 HMR ammunition One reason i am leanning to the 17 HMR is because if you sight the gun in at 100 yards you only have to lower the crosshairs 0.2 inch to shoot a target at 50 yards and raise it 2.9 inch to shoot a target at 150 yards. since i do not shoot many gophers past 100 yards it would mean only having to place the crosshair on the gopher and shooting. VS the 22lr which when sighted at 100 yardss requires you to lower the crosshair 2.9 inches to hit a target at 50 yards and if shooting a target at 150 yards to raise the crosshairs 13.6 inches

Big difference speed. The HMR has passed the time test, still available after a few yrs, also more manufacturers are coming out with the HMR. The HM2 on the other hand is going backwards. Will it become obsolete in the near future?----thats my guess-----Cowboy

If you want economy shoot a 22 if you want a rimfire that reaches out 150-200 yarsds get the HMR. I a gopher field the mach 2 is a compromise so it is neither cheap or has alot of range.

That said I would like to try marlins semi in 17m2.

I don't know if it will go away antime soon it has its following stateside it just was not as big of a hit as it's big brother.

A good semi 22 and an hmr should be in every gopher hunters inventory along with a centerfire of some type.

Hm2

C B if cost of shooting is going to a concern then you should buy a Mach 2 rifle because the ammo is almost 2/3 the cost of HMR ammo. I shot at a lot of gophers last year non of which couldn't have been killed with the HM2 round.
If I find myself in a situation where the gopher are all further than 100 yards, which they seldom are then I would be shooting a Varmint center fire round like 204 ruger or 223, or 22 Hornet. I think that HM2 ammo is like $8.99 per 50 rounds and 17 is 12 or 13.99 for 50. Most guys buy this ammo in the 500 round bricks and they can be a little less. I have my 17 sighted in at 100 meters, but I'm don't think I've shot at too many gophers at that range.
I have a good friend that shoots a lot of gophers each year and he feels that as a handloader he can load 22 Hornet for less mony that buying 17HMR ammo. FS
