Was looking at a savage with a bull barrel in this caliber, they're at just under 300 at wholesalesports and require the use of a scope.

I want a .17 hmr, I already have a 10/22 target rifle, and a .22lr very basic savage, and am now looking at .17 hmr.

I think the thing that really impresses me with this caliber is that the velocity is really decent, I can only imagine that this results in shots being very accurate at 100 yards + considering theres no wind.

Because the caliber is so small, does it make a difference for cleaning compared to the 22? to be more specific;

Does the barrel get gummed up real easy?
What do you guys prefer for varmits, FMJ's, hollow points? does it even make a difference with this caliber? I have no idea...
What kind of game is this perfect for?

thanks

I've got an older 93R17, perhaps one of the first out on the shelves. I've not noticed the fouling to be anything to be concerned about, other than you will need a 17 cal cleaning rod.

IMHO, the only thing it's really good for is gophers. Now don't get me wrong, I use mine for hunting rabbits, chickens(head shots only on eating game) and I see no reason why it could not be used for any type of varmint, say fox-sized and smaller. But gophers, where you are not necessarily concerned with head shots , are where it shines.

My 2¢.

look to get a strong .17HMR cleaning rod. i bought a cheap one and the rod flexed and connecting threads snapped. i wish i could remember manufacturer ( it was combo .17 & 22 kit). I replaced it with slightly more expensive .17hmr rod and now works fine. push the rod into barrel while holding your hand near breach area, and not from way back at the pushrod handle, the rod may flex and snap at the connecting threads, the barrel is so small in diameter that it is easy to get cleaning patch wedged. the brass jag, should be a round for 17HMR. .22 kit will be too large.(looks like a piston head

I've shot hundreds of rounds through my .17HMR, and I haven't cleaned it yet. It shoots one hole groups @ 100, if I do my part. Marlin 917 Stainless Varmint Fluted.
Now I'm upset- none of my other rifles seem to be able to match that...
