17 Hornet?

what primers is everyone using? I did load work for my cz 427 American today with cci 450s, that's all I have and use in 204 and 223. best load shot 3/8 to 1/2 inch at 55 yards 3 or 5 shot groups. I used 1680 and a 20 gr tipped nosler. worked up from 10.5 to 12.7. 12.6 gave 3650 fps and accuracy didn't change much from low to high charges. not much at all. all load work up was done at an oal of 1.73. when I settled on 12.6 gr I then tried seating depth changes. 1.72 and 1.71 opened groups to 3/4 at 55 yards. 1.74 was slight larger on average than 1.73 so I went back to 1.73. I wonder if a milder primer would help tighten things up I was thinking a cci 400.

I am using the older crappy brass from fired factory ammo(gold primers) and some of them get that bulge in the back. one separated at the bulge. some get this bulge or ring and some don't. it was not completely separated so I broke it apart using pliers. what a crappy case design. the sides don't come off a bowl shaped web with thick sides tapering to thin. the inside case head is almost flat with the side walls coming off of it in an abrupt 90 degree turn and they start out thin. this is where the ring comes from. I also have some of the newer silver primered brass that does not do this. also the gold primered brass factory ammo chronyed 3560 fps, while the silver primered stuff did 3450. pretty slow.

did more shooting today, testing the rem 7.5 and 6.5 primers. distance was 60 yards. rem 7.5 shot best yet. I picked a load of 1680 that shot 3600+ with the cci 450 and just changed the primers. yes I know this may be dangerous. no need to lecture me.

anyway I expected the 7.5 to get less velocity than the 450. it didn't it was about the same and it shot tighter groups. I shot a 10 shot group at 60 yards that measured between 1/2 inch and 9/16. 2 of 10 were out of 3/8. should shoot sub moa at 100 and its going over 3600 fps.

next up were the 6.5s and I was again surprised to find the speed did not change. accuracy however was worse. slightly worse then the cci450. I only shot 5 of these.

I do think a 527 varmint would shoot better than my American. what does not help this thing is its light weight, its lighter than advertised and I had to get used to it. it would make a heck of a walking gun though.

I have been playing with my two Cz .17 hornets, (Back In New Zealand on Holiday) over the last few weeks, Haven't got as much hunting done as hopped, due two poor weather (two cyclones) lots of flooding. Shot Few rabbits, feral gesse, etc.
I have shortend the .17 varmint down to 20" and installed a moderator, will post a second post, with results and speed loss.

.17 hornet, CFE blackout powder. Big speed increase.

I gave this powder a go, on a few loads today, very big improvement in speed over ADI 2207, (H4198)
Shot in a Cz American std 22' barrel. 20gr v-max. fitted with DPT moderator.
Current loads.
ADI 2207- 11,7g, WSR, hornardy 3220fps
" 12g " " 3325fps (case is full to top)
N120 10.5 " " 3315fps
factory hornardy ammo 3590fps.
Trailboss 2g " " sub sonic, (25gr bullet) (9 out of ten shots):d

CFE Blackout, Hornardy brass and WSR primer. five shots of each.
20gr v-max.
12g - 3470fps
12.3g - 3566fps
12.6g - 3738fps
12.8g - 3779fps,
Sd spread was between 20-35 on all loads,

25gr hornardy hollow point,
11.2g for 3187fps.

All grouping about 5-10mm at 50m, or same as all other loads, Just finished, repriming and resizing brass, and have settled on a load, of 12.5gr, hopefully find a few rabbits to test on this week. Impressive performance increase, :d

Cz 527, .17 hornet, Varmint, has been chopped and suppressed, and tested,
WSR primers, Hornardy brass or PPU resized,
@24" was at 3361fps with 11.7g H4198 20 v-max
3374fps with 10.5 N120 20 v-max
3660 fps with factory 20g

@20" with Moderator installed. Dpt .17 overbarrel.
3304fps with 11.7g H4198 20g v-max.
3274fps with 10.5g N120 20 v-max.
3375 fps with factory 20g (different Batch)

Got hold of sum CFE Blackout, and done a bit of work with it in my Cz American, so settled in on a load of 12.5g, WSR primer, and Hornardy brass, 20g v-max.
this gave me
3624fps with 12.5g CFE black out, 20g V-max. Perfect.

Much handier, rifle and nice and quiet, with sound moderator, barrel is 24", might drop it back and chop it down to 18", for 22 inch overall,
1/2 to 3/4 inch groups at 100m, and had a play at 200m in the rain, two five shot 1.5" groups, no rabbit is safe inside 250m now.
