17 Hornet

Non of my manuals list the 17 Hornet either, i got my load info from Hodgdons web site as well as other powder manufactures. I'm using Lil'Gun and CfE BLK with 20gr bullets. Not finding my load data right now.

Lil Gun works okay, but is sensitive to sitting in the sun shooting ground squirrels. CFE BLK works well, and is far more consistent in varying conditions.

12.5 g of CFE blackout with a 20 g bullet, small rifle primer and PPU or Hornardy brass,
Winchester and remington brass has different capacity, so drop back and work up,
for aprox 3500-3600 in 3 different .17 hornet rifles, 2 CZ, one Anshultz.
Saubier.com has further Data, from sum of my testing, ie with 25 g bullets,

I loaded 10.0 gr Lilgun behind the 20gr Zmax, devastating on gophers, badgers and coyotes, put over 6,000 rounds through a CZ527 varmint before it started to loose accuracy, I sold it to a guy along with the rest of the loading supplies I had and he re barreled it and just loves it, fun little cartridge, dinky to load.

Hodgdons data shows a max of 10gr of Lilgun with 20 gr bullets, but my own rifles started showing pressure signs at around 9.7gr, so I used 9.5gr. I don't know if the issue was different brass, or different lots of powder. I know people that tried to start at 10gr, and actually blew primers.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I'm also getting started reloading and with a cz 527 my understanding is that there's a 1 in 16.5 twist as opposed as other rifles which are 1 in 14.

Would cfe blk powder with 20 grain vmax bullets and federal small rifle primers along with hornady brass still be a recommended combination? How does the barrel twist rate affect the recommended choice of bullets?

Intended use for me is gophers and coyotes... Whichever happens to cross my path on the farm. Still, even if it's for hunting, I still intend to plink and I'd like the best combination for accuracy and punch at long distances.

I have used CFE BLK in 3 17 Hornets. CZ American, Varmint and Savage 25 Walking Varminter. All shot very well. Currently only have the American remaining. Great gopher medicine but never used mine on coyotes.

I smoked a coyote at approximately 200 yards a few weeks back. Surprised me actually. Was factory hornady 20 grain cartridges.

A couple years ago I tried 12.5 and 12.7 grains of cfe blk. Looking at the brass I dont see any problems so I’m going to try the same load with 20 grain vmax and remington 6 1/2 primers. Theyre supposed to be a hornet primer and seem to be plentiful. My goal is 3600 fps and a zero at 200 yards.

Hornets are FUN. I’ve got 4 rifles in 17 hornet, 2 in 22 hornet and 1 22 k hornet.
