I have a 17 hornet rifle on order that should be here right in the middle of gopher season. I have been told that most of the 17 hornet brass, dies, and ammo are on backorder from Hornady. I was just wondering if anyone knows for sure if I can take 22 hornet brass and neck it down to 17 and make it work. I'm planning a road trip next week and was thinking I should pick up some 22 hornet brass if I can find it and it works.

I had some time to do some research this evening and from what I can find you can not neck down 22 hornet brass and make 17 hornet brass. You can make 17 Ackley hornet brass but Hornady's 17 hornet is slightly different. The biggest difference will be the rim thickness. The old 22 hornet brass will probably not cycle in the new Savage action. I just hope I don't end up with a new rifle and not be able to use it all summer long for lack of ammo.
