How much is involved in re-chambering my Savage mark 2 from 17 HM2 to a calibre that I can actually buy ammo for?
Can I just send the rifle away and if so where is the best place to go?

Thanks for any info!
Rob.

Rob:
The Mach 2 is based on the 22 LR while the HMR is based on the WMR case.
I don't belive the Savage Mk ll is suitable for the extra power of the WMR/HMR.
I believe the bolt handle is the only 'locking lug'.

There are several bolt rimfires that use the handle as the "locking lug".

I would expect you should be able to re-chamber to the HMR but the biggest problem will be that the HMR is larger diameter and longer so won't fit in the mach 2 magazine. You maybe could make a single shot out of it?

Someone will make mach 2 ammo again at some point.... I'm sure.... maybe...

There are still a few guys looking for these rifles who have ammo stashed away. Better to sell and buy an HMR. I would think just the machine work involved would be at least half if not more than half the cost of a similar rifle.
