I am going to buy a .17 Remington. So far i found Cooper and CZ offer this chambering. Not sure if i want to spend the money on a Cooper since i have no real intention other than glorified plinking and reloading interest for this gun. Are the CZ's decent? I haven't ever handled one or known anyone that has one. Most of the things i read about them seem positive. Also does anyone know of anyone else who chambers this?I know savage is brining out the Hornet and considered it but i want to go 4000FPS plus.

saubier.com guys over there love the .17 remin the cz. Think the guys name is tou or somesuch who has shot the cz .17REM out to 1000 yards with surprising accuracy.

I was doing some load development with mine and had the 20gr V-Max zipping along pretty fast. I backed them off to just over 4000fps. I was shooting into the ditch on the right and it's a field road with no traffic. The camera angle makes it look bad.

I have a 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 17 Rem fun little combo need to spend more time working up a load for it though tried 25gr V-Max but didn't really have much luck with them bought some 20gr V-Max hope they will work out for me.

Just need to find the time to work on it.

The 17 Rem and the FB are for two different uses in my opinion. I know others will argue about this. Use the Rem with the heavier bullets for coyotes and the FB for smaller varmints with lighter bullets.

I have owned both.

What made you choose a fireball over the original .17 remington?

Supposedly the barrel life is better. I bought it with crows and gophers in mind. It's pretty much a 20gr bullet rifle with the smaller case capacity. Dropping a coyote at 300 yards is no problem, but I wouldn't be shooting much further than that.

i wanted a "walking varminter" as i have pretty much every heavy barrel factory varmint caliber available, the little hole makes even the skinny barrel on my Model 7 a medium weight barrel
out to 300yds the 17FB acts just like any other 223 based cartridge except its quieter plus it's fun to use on gophers and such
coyotes don't seem to notice that they were hit with a 20g bullet

FYI it isn't always my first choice depending on where i'm going to be calling but i do not regret its purchase at all

The only real problem i have with the 17 calibre is reloading, mind you the 204 isn`t much easier on your fingers. Need a guy with small skinny fingers so you don`t get pinched as often. :) I need to finish up my 17 Rem but the 204 is so much fun and the 32 gr very effective on coyotes.

I'm 6'5" so handling those little bullets shouldn't be an issue....:):)

6'5" with tiny little hands. I also had to get used to holding the 204 bullets while loading but you already knew that. I'm sure you'll get used to the 17.

Gotta agree on that one, but if you go with the .17 Rem loaded with
8.2 gr. of Trail Boss and a 25gr. Hornady HP, you now have a 2700fps.
load that will shoot nice to 200yds. and zip through a deer, elk or
moose skull without exploding on the outside. Yer barrel will also
last a few thousand rounds longer to boot.
A great, choice loading for the "One Shot Head Shot Club".

Just make sure that little pill is placed well and make friggin' sure
it ain't windy..;)

Thanks for that load info as I mentioned earlier I have a T/C Contender carbine barrel in 17 Rem to use for bobcat hunting this load if accurate would be perfect.

and having a container of Trailboss on the shelf makes it that much better.

I found this load to shoot under 1" AT 100yds. in my 700 Rem BDL and
seein' that the Hornady 25 gr. bullet is designed to go 4000+fps. it
will not explode on contact when driven at 2700.
On raccoons or cats, it just makes a little pinhole through 'em.
A shoulder shot on these small critters will drop them, but on deer and
larger stuff, the bullet must be placed in the brain case or at the point
where the neck joins the base of the skull.

You'll enjoy shooting this load, and the ease of cleanup after due to
the lack of fouling in the barrel.

For them folks that don't figure a .17 cal can drop big critters, check out
the hog shooting videos on the Gamo USA website and see what a
pellet gun can do!

Have you ever tried it with 20gr bullets I have both 20gr and 25gr V-Max?

I have not had much luck getting an accurate load with the 25gr bullets and heard that the 20gr V-Max are supposed to be more accurate than the 25's.
