Ok wizards of the machine shop. There is a good deal of talk about the new winchester super magnum. When will ammo be available and when will rifles be available.

Suppose a fellow picked up a nice rifle in Hornady 17 rimfire, would it be possible to re-chamber to 17 Winchester super magnum ?

Would the rimfire firing pin/bolt face work or require work?
The Winchester round is said to be heavier brass and can take higher pressures, would the action of a hornady 17 have the strength needed?

Thanks for you views and have a great day!

If you start with a .17HMR, you will like as not be fine with a chamber ream, and opening up the bolt face to fit. May have to set the face of the bolt in a bit deeper to allow for a thicker rim, too.
If you really want to see what the size difference is, find some of the Winchester power driver cartridges that they based the round upon, and measure them against a rifle.

This all under the operating theory, that the rifle chosen is physically able to handle the slightly larger round.

Ammo? Maybe next year. Same with guns.

I would guess it's not gonna work as Savage didn't use the model 93 action for the 17wsm but designed a new one that is larger. The rim is much larger in diameter as well so the firing pin won't hit the rim on such a conversion.

I wouldn't trust the action of a basic 17 hmr to stand up to a 17wsm. Get about the same results as ruger did using 17hmr in a 22lr action. Might be a bit safer with a bolt but if the rim is much bigger the fp wont strike the correct place. Would be safer and possibly in the long run cheaper to buy a new gun.
