Hey guys, I have a box of 170 grain interlocks FP that I was wanting to load for my .308....not the most accurate or desirable bullet but I had bought them for my 30-30 and I just don't shoot that too much so I figured I would use them and some 3031 for plinking ammo because it's easier to find. Problem is I can't find any solid data on this combo. Looking at similar weight bullets (168-175gr) and their max/min loads I was thinking about 39gr IMR 3031....min loads seem to be in the 37 grain range and the max loads up around 42...I was thinking that 39 grains should be high enough to have no chance of a squib load and not enough to be dangerously hot....ideas? I have checked to reloading manuals and searched online with no luck. I'm pretty sure It'll be fine, just looking for a bit of piece of mind from more experienced reloaders

The Lee book lists (39gr min for 165gr) and (38gr min for 175gr) using IMR3031.
Personally I'd throw 40gr of 3031 in and seat some bullets. Your under max charge, and the 30-30 bullet profile usually takes more case space anyways.

You dont want to push a 30-30 bullet much past 2400fps if you're using it on game. Some of the premium bullets used in the Marlin Express get pushed to 2600fps but that's about the max you'd want IMO.
The 40gr of 3031 should move that 170gr about 2450-2500fps.

hey, thank you guys for the input. ill give them a try with 40gr of 3031 in the near future. i have loaded up the 150gr interlock RN and the M305 and my savage 10PC shot the 150's. the 150 gr bullets were staying together no problem with that load but i dont have a chrony so i have no idea what the speed was on them. just wanted to be on the safe side and ask. thanks again

I used the same 170 grain flat point bullet in my old 03-A3 30-06 used as my "rain gun".
Don't be fooled, this bullet can be very accurate and as stated above designed to perform best between 2000 to 2500 fps.
What I liked about this bullet in my 03A3 was the bore was worn and when these bullets are kicked in the seat of their pants the softer lead core allowed them to fill the over sized bore.
As you can see below the base of the bullet will fill the grooves and the nose will ride on top of the lands.
This is why I think these bullets were so much better shooting in my 03-A3 that was .309 mid bore and .312 at the muzzle.
Bottom line, it made a very good round for hunting in the woods, and the last dying words said by the deer were "I've been shot with a 30-30 magnum".

it could end up being run through my dads gun as a hunting round if things pan out well....we will see. he is only shooting 1-200 yards so the BC, muzzle velocity ect ect really is not all that concerning if i can bring it in to say a 1-2" grouping at 100 yards....dead is dead and he wont shoot any farther than 200.

I was shooting them out of a bolt action 30-06 and using a variety of powders, 4064, 760, IMR-4895 etc.
I just checked downstairs and I was even shooting these 170 grain bullets out of my M-1 Garand using H4895.
A good friend of mine up here uses 40 gr of 3031 behind the old CIL 170 gr Sabre-Tip bullets. They are the ones with the yellow round nose plastic tip made for the 30-30 factory loads. His load is very accurate, and feeds slick as can be in his 308 Rem 600 carbine.
I have never run any of them over the Oehler, but the moose and bear fold up pretty quick.
