178 grain 308 load

I always suggest trying Varget. I have had excellent results with bullet weights from 150-208 grs in the 308. A full case has been the load I settled on. Your results could vary.

43.5 ish grains of varget is usually the "golden recipe" I see for 178's. It's pretty popular. I've had multiple friends just do loads of 43.2, 43.4, 43.6 and 43.8 and only need to try different seating depths before calling it a day.

Yes. I pretty much only use Varget these days for everything from 168 to 185. I have used H4895 in the past for 168, 175 and 178. Do yourself a favour and work up some loads.

44.5gr Varget.
2.166” to the ogive in a .308 Obermeyer chamber (basically 20thou from the lands).
43.5gr Varget was also accurate, but I wanted the speed. That gave me 2715fps out of a 22” tube.
No pressure signs.

What’s you barrel lenght?

My 24” savage factory barrel loved this combo
43.0gr Varget, CCI BR2 primers, Hornady BTHP match 178gr., lapua brass

Now my IBI 26” M40 barrel, loves this load and is clocking 2700fps
42.7gr Varget, CCI BR2 primer, SMK 175gr., lapua brass

Good luck, and start around 42.0gr of varget and work it up slowly!

I’ve had several rifles that responded well to my original tiny hole making load in my first custom…..
42.1g varget pushing the 178 hornadys have never been over 1” in anything I have owned. It’s my go to

Anyone got any good recipes?

Did the ladder test for my 20" barrel Bergara B14 HMR Premiere and getting consistent 1/2 MOA with Campro 180 gr SP.

42.1gr of VV N150, CCI LRP, Federal Brass and shoulder bump. Getting an average of 2468 fps.

I emailed Campro regarding hunting deer with those bullets within 100 yards and they replied those bullets are go to go.

42.1 grains of TAC gets me 2500+ fps from an 18.6" barrel with the Hornady 178 BTHP. Accuracy is very good. 2.80" OAL, WLRM primer and PPU brass is the rest of the recipe...
