178gr ELD-X, 300 H and H...? 300 WSM data close enough for starting?

edit: why can't I put a '&' in my thread title? We really need a database upgrade :)

Data for new bullets and powders is pretty much non-existent, but I've read that 300 WSM data is almost interchangeable.

That said, I've got a bunch of 178gr ELD-X I'd like to try with this rifle.

Powders I've got on hand are
H4350
IMR4350
RL19
IMR4166
IMR4451
H4831SC

Am leaning towards starting at 64gr 4831SC and working up towards 69-70 ish. That sound reasonably sane?

IMR4350 looks like a good bet too, and standardizing another caliber on that powder would make my powder locker happy.

The data in Pet Loads for 180gr bullets is full of 4350 & 4831 loads, so I'm guessing I'm in the right ballpark.

The case capacity of the old 300H&H is greater than the wsm and smaller than the WM. For my own loading, i either use published data, or interpolate between the wsm and wm data. I currently shoot 200 gr Accubond with 70 gr. Imr 7828 Ssc and Federal Lrm match primers in WW Super casings. Rifle is a FN Mauser Supreme. Use at your own risk, as this is not a published load.

Btw, Hodgdon has published data for 180 gr bullets for the two powders you mention.

Thank you muchly! I didn't think to check the Hodgdon website...they have dropped the 300H&H from their yearly (magazine) manuals...glad to see it is still on the website.

I can't think of any reasonable reason, to not use 180gr data with a 178gr ELD-x. Just start at the min chg and work your way up. You are not running a non grooved monometal there. I'd start with the H4831sc and then go to the RL19 if you don't want to buy powder, but I'd also want to try some RL22 in that.

WM = win mag or wetherby mag?

Use 180gr jacketed bullet data.

I've encountered this a bit myself lately, looking for 308 Norma Mag data to cross reference with Quickload. Not much data out there for some of the "newer" powders (RL19 22 23 26), H1000, IMR 4955, IMR 7977, IMR 7828, Vihtavuori, Ramshot, etc)

Measure your case capacity, the WSM will typically be in the 80-83grs of water, the H&H *should* be in the 86-90gr range

Take a half dozen fired cases, weigh them. Fill with water to the top and weigh again. Subtract difference for h2O capacity

If it's more than the WSM, you'll be fine to use WSM data starting loads. WSM is loaded to 65k psi max, depending on what rifle your H&H is, you may want to load a little less
