.17HMR advice for scope and ammo

I have the same rifle, mines likes Hornady ammo the best. For a scope I put a Bushnell Trophy 6-18 a decent scope and won't break the bank.

As far as magnification goes, I experimented with several scopes on my HMR, from 2x7 up to 6.5x20. While the high power is nice at times, I settled on a 3-12 for the happy medium between short and long range. I employ the rifle in the middle ground, where .22LR leaves off and the centerfires start. My particular .17 is effective out to about 150, and 12 power works for me.

manbear: that bushnell banner scope comes with the turret for 17 hmr and a comes with a blank one that can be filled in for different trajectories so i'm sure with some range time with you're fav ammo you could use it for 22 lr no problem. Until you run out of vertical adjustment that is.

I shoot 20 grain Hornady ammo. The 17 didn't group as well.

I have a Nikon buckmaster scope on my rifle. It brings things nice and close when popping clays at 200 yards.

I put the Bushnell with the .17 BDC on my Marlic 917V, and the Sweet .17 on my Dad's CZ 452. Both have done very well. He hasn't had as many rounds through his as I have had through mine though. I run the Federal 17gr's through mine because that's what I sighted it in with, and other brands always print in other spots. I also gave my Dad several different brands, in both 17 and 20 grains, although I'm not sure what it has settled on.
On a calm day off of my front rest, I can hit the 300m gong at SherPark with it. In the bush, I've never missed a squirrell, and the gophers I missed were my own fault.
Good shooting.

X2 on the 20 grain hornady. That along with pillar bedding the action and floating the barrel with marine tech and dropping the trigger down to 20 ounces produces fairly consistent 3\4 inch groups @ 100 yards.
The odd group will go for a $hit but the wind sure doesn't help with these light rounds.
Wrong price range I know, but I stuck a VXIII 6.5- 20X on it.
