so the capabilities of the 17hmr have been beat to death on other forums so im not going to ask if anyone thinks its a good coyote gun but i was wondering if anyone has had any success with raccoons, i just picked up a marlin 917vs and am dieing to use it.

I bought a 17HMR early this year to try out and have seen nothing but good things from it so far. I mostly bought it to take care of our badger problem. Killed a coyote with it a few weekends ago, IMO definitely not the best coyote rifle but it will do the job under the right circumstances.

I personally think that it would be a perfect raccoon round.

No problem at all for a raccoon, or critters of that size. I shot a barn full of them 2 years ago with one no issues. Gophers, squirles, rabitts, beaver, anything like this. I did push the limits this winter and shot 2 coyotes, both at 50 yards approx, it worked as well, but as you mentioned the 17 hmr is great. The plus side its also quite.

Not at all a good coyote round, stick to whistle pigs, and other vermin, It will blow a patch of hide off a coyote, and it may not die right off, and run away in the bush.
The bullet has to remain intact for fur critters, or its a mess.;)

A racoon is a peice of cake for the hmr, mine will take out beavers like nothing. They work fine on coyote's too, just shoot them in the head.
