Not sure which one should I pick for gophers?
I already have a CZ 22 lr but not enough for over 100 yards shots.....

Is the price of ammo the same and which one would be more accurate? I am must totally lost:confused::confused:

.22 WMR don't vaporize small rodents like the .17 HMR does. :D The small projectile of the .17 HMR is more sensitive to crosswinds though...GET BOTH. :D

.17 HMR all the way. It just obliterates gophers. Shot one out to a laser ranged 248 yds with my Savage BVSS. It's a very accurate firearm and calibre. Granted it took two shots to kill it (not enough Kentucky windage on the first one) but it still had more than enough velocity to do the job. Shots of 100 yds are simple for this round.

ya my .17 is real good out to 300 yards. but i like the .22 mag you never know when you need to take something a little biger then a gopher.

So...if your .22 WMR is more accurate than your .17 HMR, and your .17 HMR is supposedly good to 300 yards...what are you claiming your .22 WMR can shoot?

I highly doubt a .22 WMR can outperform a .17 HMR in calm conditions.

in the wind the .22 mag kicks the s**t out of the .17..

um. calm conditions.. good luck where i live.. i have both and i am selling my .17 seeing when the wind blows my shots blow!

and i like to kills stuff a little biger then gophers

Well, a lot of times real world results don't mirror simulated conditions...but I'm very confident my .17 HMR outperforms the .22 WMR...except in the kinetic energy department.

I don't know how an H&R rifle shoots, but my Savage is definitely no slouch.

cost wise, the 22mag. If cost is no issue, i would skip both & go with the 223. With reloads you can do anything rimfires can do + alot more obviously + reloads may end up costing cheaper than both.

Tried the 17 fad, but it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. It was definately accurate, but the 2400fps 17grain bullet didn't hit very hard. I now run a 22 mag for much cheaper and am very happy with it.

There is nothing wrong with either of them, so if you are going to shoot alot, I'd look at ammo availability and price of ammo.

22mag vs 17mag

I haven't had a chance to try the 22mag VMAX bullets but I imagine that they would be as accurate as the 17mag. Especially in my model 54 Anschutz! I have been getting 1/2" groups with 40G winchester hollow point ( most of the time ).

I had a top of the line custom Ruger 10/22 Magnum and even when I shot the V-Max ammo my 1717 Anschutz blow's it out of the water accuracy wise. It's more fun to actually hit what you want to :p

Update
