17HMR Or 22 mAG

I haven't had a chance to try the 22mag VMAX bullets but I imagine that they would be as accurate as the 17mag. Especially in my model 54 Anschutz! I have been getting 1/2" groups with 40G winchester hollow point ( most of the time ).

I have some. Haven't tried any yet, but based on the few people I know who shoot them, they're insanely accurate.

Good choice on the 22mag and if you get some of the 33gr accutip you will have a tack driver with more power than the 17. My 597mag loves em and they kill groundhogs DEAD!!!!!!! Way better than any 22mag bullet I have tried.

Good choice. The 22mag is a great cartridge. I used to own a 17HMR, but found it too expensive and lacking in retained energy and wind sensitive.

Good choice on the CZ. I have two and love them both.

This year is my first year of gopher hunting and I am going crazy......I got
a ruger 10/22 with busnell Banner scope and three 25 round magazines.....
a CZ 22 LR Varmint with leupold VX II 3-9X40......
a CZ 22 magnum with fixed 4 power Nikon....
a CZ 204 ruger with Leupold Mark 4 3.5-14X50.......
a Tikka 22-250 with Bushnell 6500 in 4.5-30X50.....
3 harris pibods of different lenghts..
a Diana 350 magnum airgun with Dampa mounts and Leapers illuminated scope

I think I am all set for now....some farmers already start loving me big time.......

Gophers are very very addicting. My varmint list is very similar to yours.

Just sold my 10/22 this winter.

How do you like your 204. I hear they are a nice little cartridge to shoot all day

Welcome to the squeak shooting addiction, my body count is approaching 1000 this year. I use a 204 most of the time, a couple of 223's while its cooling off, a 10/22 if there is an insane infestation, a 22 Hornet for a change of pace. Had a 17HMR, sold it, not enough terminal efect and to expaensive to shoot IMO. Might try a 17 fireball next year.

I like what I have been hearing about the 30 Grain VMAX bullets for the .22 mag. Last year I gave my 17 HMR to my brother in law for a wedding present with the intention of buying myself a new HMR to fill the gap between 22 LR and .204, but now I am seriously considering going with the 22 magnum instead of the 17HMR.

Not till economy turns around though,:(

I dont like the V-MAX for my .17. My buddy has a .22mag and does not like them for the mag ither. They dont fragment very well with a little distance between you and the gopher. I found CCI TNT's to do more damage. The V-MAX are very acurate though.

The place where I go for gophers is pretty badly infested.....I start with 10/22 and they them with 50-60 yards......then I take my CZ 22 and take care of the remaining within 100 yards....then comes the CZ 204 for longer shots......Now that I have 22 mag also, I may have to switch between the 22 mag and 204.......The 204 with Mark 4 scope is very very deadly and 40 gr Vmax makes gophers fly 10-15 feet away and about 3-6 feet up in the air......
Oh, the CZ 22 lr, I use CCI segmented/Quick Shock with 1640 fps and they are blown up big time..........22-250 is lot fun too but I can't see the gophers blow up in my scope....that is reason I bought 204.....

I have that problem with the 22-250 aswell. It is a better coyote gun. Just a little to much kick to watch your shot in the scope. I put a Mark 4 LR/T 8.5-25x50 on my Rem XCR tactical longrange and enjoy it. I borrow my grandfathers 22 hornet sometimes and it is a fun little gun for gophers. I have some sierra TNT bullets for it but have not got around to working a load up yet. I her they are suposed to fragment from something as little as a grape. I think if i were to buy another varmint gun I would go with ither a 204 or 223. I have not used the CCI quick shoks but have got good results from stingers and velociters out of my .22 Have been using yellowjackets lately. They do major damage but are a little dirty.

I have shot the Remington 33 gr. accutip, Winchester 33 gr. hp and the Federal speer tnt 30 gr. They all group quite nice but the Remington accutip had a slight edge. They are the most expensive of the three. I would still like to try the Hornady .22mag but no one has them.
