Hey all, wondering if someone with lots of experience hunting with 17hmr can help me decide on a scope .

Options:
3-9
3.5-18
6.5-20
Etc.

Rifle is an Anschutz 1761
Uses would be for long range still hunting rabbit&squirrel in the winter, occasional calling coyote/fox <100yd and target shooting for fun.

3-9 would be my choice you will be good out to 300 yards and become proficient in reading the wind

3.5-18
good field of view at the bottom end and nice power to view for target shooting as the 17 leaves a tiny hole in paper.
Currently have an Athlon Ares 4.5-30x56 on it and it is too much scope in terms of weight for field work with such a light gun. Was always in the lower powers for gophers shooting in Saskatchewan this spring.

I was thinking very similar cause it shoots flat to 150 anyways.
Should suit most of my use.... my only concern is long range winter rabbit hunting.

What mag were you for the gophers & how far?

I misspoke, my scope is 4.5-27 and the rifle is a Anschutz 1517 and was in the 10 - 12 power range for 100+ yards when I was feeling silly. Used the CZ 22lr for shots under that but used the 17 for the longer shots as you say it can shoot fairly flat.
You will like the 1761 as they appear to be great shooters like the 1517. Target at 100 yd with 15.5 gr bullets.

3.5-18X, though I think I've seen allot more in 6-18X? Anyhow, that's what's been on mine for allot of years...and you wouldn't believe the # of gophers that have fallen to that set-up even if I cut the estimated # in half. lol

I suppose application is really key, if it was always going to been a rabbit gun in the woods and -50 yard shots were the norm, I wouldn't make the same suggestion.

I got the gun for 70-100y shots more or less.

.17’s can utilize a higher magnification. I have used a 6-24 for many years. It was a bit too high at 6X on the bottom.
Of your suggestion I would do the 3-18 range. I currently have a 4-12 on mine.
The .17 can shoot so small, a good zoom makes headshots nice. Great for Grouse in the bush when they are still and camouflage in.

Thats kind of what i was thinking, the only issue with my 3.5-18 is its a BRX reticle and there is like no drop on a 17hmr ( in the effective range ). lol.
I may just use it.

Why was the 6x too much? focus issues? or just too zoomed?

Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42
Bushnell Forge 2-16x50

Both parallax down to 10y and have a low enough low-end mag to engage varmints up close, while being able to zoom in for those long shots at the limits of 17hmr.
