17HMR Semiauto?

Wasn't there a recall on some .17HMR semi-autos and/or a recommendation that the ammunition not be used in semi-autos?

I have Magnum reaserch 17hmr semi auto.Looks like a 10-22 but heavy action and bull barrel. Got it at North Pro but their not imported anymore.Works fine for me.

To the best of my knowledge all semi 17 HMR's are discontinued and most ammo manufacturers warn about using their ammo in semi's. Phil.

So any idea what was the problem with a 17HMR in semi.

Overpressure I am guessing

I received this in an email direct from Remington when I inquired regarding my 597...

"The only other advice I can offer then would be to contact our Importer In Canada. They are handling and facilitating these returns and repairs for us. Speak to them and find out if there is any other option available, as it would have to be handled through them anyway due to the international customs laws pertaining to shipping and receiving firearms.

The Gravel Agency is located in quebec and can be reached at 1-418-682-3000."

...I haven't called them yet about mine. Let me know how you make out.

Shooster,
I just sent them(Gravel Agency) an Email requesting information about the 597 recall, and I will also go to the place where I bought the rifle from... to see if they will handle it (the recall). I also bought 5 new spare mag's too!. I kinda like the semi-auto 597...fun to shoot, it just too bad its not safe to fire!. I "drop" few coyotes with it last year at approximately 180 yards!.
I will keep you posted. Thanks again.

The FN P90 is bottleneck, and the five seven pistol. Both are blowback, albiet not rimfire.

the P90 is a blowback with a heavy bolt, also the case is center fire with i assume a thick walled lower ended case, the five-seven pistol is delayed blowback, so it can fire the 5.7x28 cartridge safely with out case blowout etc.
rimfire's are thiner at the "head" so they can fire.

It seem like Hornady has really pushed the limits of the Rimfire Cartridge Idea. My only guess is they design a stronger case along with the rifles having a stronger "hammer" spring that still can fire but not have a blowout in a semi.... that would be cool.. hell a pistol would be also pretty awesome too

the hmr and hm2 have failed due to thin cases. I understand that certain batches were built with a strong enough case, however most are built cheaper and with the thinner case. I have a converted 10/22 that now shoots hm2. no problems to date.

My marlin 717 to date has had no issue yet either. But it kind of makes me nervous about it being possibly unsafe.
I was told to keep the chamber clean and I should have no problems.
