So I was shooting gophers and this farmer said one of my rounds had ricochet and hit one of his cows. He is all pissed off because he thought we were using 22lr. WTF

Only time a cow was nearby was when we were hitting the gophers that were less than 20yards from us. Hitting anything from 20yards with a .17gr vmax will disintegrates upon impact.

all rounds ricochet under the right conditions. Never EVER shoot within 30 degrees or so of livestock, buildings, or anything else you don't want to shoot.

I'd strongly suggest you 'make it right' with the farmer, so you don't ruin the good name of other shooters out there.

Also, WRT 17 vs 22lr - either will injure livestock, so I'm not sure where that concern came from.

Are these rounds (.17hmr in general) hard to stop? Thing is I want to build a portable backstop for my future one and wonder what should I build it from and how thick should it be ?

I figured three of our massivly thick phone books would be enuff. Nope, cleanly through all three, no bullet fragmentation or deformation. Hmmmm. I know it goes through 3/4" plywood without much trouble.

If you're building a portable backstop I can see some angled metal plates inside a metal "box" that'll deflect the round a few times causing it to break apart and not damage the plates/box.

I built some steel gophers for our gun club a few years back, and when we tested them with the .17's and the .22WMR, we found that there was some serious penetration from both. We were using 3/8 steel. I don't know the exact hardness but do know it is not just mild steel.
The hone books would work better if they were wet. I bet it wouldn't go through more than about 150 pages...
I don't know what to say about the farmer. I bet he claims it was his 'very best and/or prize winning cow' though. Good Luck with that

i would like to say the safest way to go about it is to always keep livestock behind you but there's no way to predict where a ricochet will go....

chances are tho if you hit the animal and you could see it out of the corner of your eye you would have noticed it spook and run.... most cow's i shoot around are in no way gun shy so if they take off there's a good chance something hit them.... you said the only time the cow's where around was when you where shooting gopher's at 20yrd's... where where the cow's when you where doing this?

cow...............you.................................target

Live fast by that motto, and you will never have a problem with landowners.

However, if that farmer is convinced of reckless behaviour, that could shut down any further permission for gophers or any other hunting oppurtunity in that area.
