Hey guys. I'm interested in custom building a .17HMR kinda like alot of you have done with your 10/22s. Anyone know where I can find a good semi auto action, stock, barrel, mags etc for my build at a good price? Anyone else have a custom .17HMR and care to share pics?

The .17 is generally not preffered to build a custom on as upposed to the .22 simply because of inconsistancy in ammo. Having said that I know of a number of guys who have build custom .17's and have been very successful.

Your best bet for a semi would be the 10/22. I am not sure if Ruger ever did make a 17HMR in 10/22 but that doesn't really mattter - the 22 mag reciever/stock, etc is the exact same.

Look around for a 10/22 mag action in canada. I don't believe they are made any more and are getting harder to find but keep an eye out in the equipment exchange forums and you might come across something.

Both rimfire sports and hawktech cary a number of accessories and you may find some of the parts you are looking for there. I believe Barry at bits of pieces also has some parts for the 10/22 so might want to check with him first.

I have seen a couple of .17HMR barrels in the EE. Both I belive were made by VQ but I believe GM also makes a .17 barrel. For stocks look at bits of pieces - (this is where I bought mine and I believe you can get stocks for the mag versions.

Good luck!

IIRC ruger gave up on the semi 17hmr. The timing is different than a .22mag though Volquartsen seems to have it down. May be a little 'more to it' than you think. Just my .02$

thanks for the info guys. for a custom build, it was a toss up between a .17hmr and a .22lr. sounds like i may be better off with the .22 as there are more parts available and the prices are a bit better.

Apparantly some folks quite like their Rem 597' auto loading 17 HMR rifles, so there is an action you can start with. I'm sure Boyts will have a very nice stock available for that action, now all you have to do is find a barrel, which I wouldn't think would be that hard. FS

Are you trying to say the .17hmr ammunition is inconsistent compared to .22lr?!?!?!

You are kidding right?

? No I am not kidding.

Maybe compared to some of the cheaper brands such as Federal bulk pack or Winchester dynapoints, or another round like that but compared to a high end type of .22lr of equal value - say Eley Match EPS, the Eley is much more consistant.

I have never tried the eley ..17 ammunition though. I am not sure how this would fair in the consistancy department.

And also, I have been running matches on RFC for quite some time now. In the benchrest shoots even at 100 yards it is ALWAYS the .22lr's that win - never has a .17 won or really ever come close - simply because of ammunition consistancy.

Take a look at this article - I havn't read through the whole thing but it should give you an idea of how much work is put into that round ;)

Sorry, I assumed you were talking standard high velocity ammunition. My Bad.

With sub-sonic target ammo by the very fact of staying below the speed of sound, you get more consistency as well as being target ammunition.

Would like to see a .17 hmr target setup vs a .22lr target setup both shooting eley.

An incredible group that "Cheif Dave" shot there. I believe the particulars of his gun were McMillian stock, Kidd trigger, VQ (snake flute was it?) barrel, on the 10/17.

I think the semi-auto was key in getting that group. Bolt actions are generally consistantly more accurate but for itty bitty groups the semi's seem to do better because they are so consistant after fired (cartridge is put in the chamber the same way each time, etc).
