Im looking for your recommendations / experience in the search for a quality 18"-20" upper. This will be a benchrest set up, shooting from 100-500m. Ideally a 1-8 twist heavy barrel. I will be hand loading for it.

Cheers!

It's all in the barrel and the ammo as beltfed said.
I've had many AR's that will shoot sub moa with decent ammo. The best one was my build with an ATRS 1:7 twist heavy stainless with muzzle brake machined into the barrel (non removable), my Bushmaster varmint/target upper would also do it, it was an 8 twist. My PWS 12 inch will shoot sub moa at 100 yards with it's 12 inch 8 twist barrel but I'm not sure I'd bother trying to shoot that one beyond 300 yards since the shorter barrel is going to be running less muzzle velocity resulting in more wind deflection as well as greater holdovers.

Any AR with a decent barrel shooting quality ammo with a good shooter behind the trigger should be capable of shooting 1 moa or better. You may need to try a few different types of ammo to find the right one for the barrel you choose but most will do it. Even my 6.5 inch build would do 2 moa at 100 yards with quality ammo.

My 20" JP still shoots sub moa after a couple years/seasons of 3gun abuse.
Checking my zero a couple months ago, before heading to a match in the US, my best group of the day was slightly over 1" at 300 meters.
This was using factory 55 gr Hornady Steelmatch ammo.
1:8 twist, 223 wylde chamber.

The good thing is I know the gun can shoot. The bad part is that when I miss targets, I can't blame my gear!

BRTLN P11 .224 8 5R .224 1-8, 30", 5R MP+ $495.00 CDN

This. Keep your other upper parts and get a gunsmith install this wonder on your upper receiver.

Cheers.

30"? Would you run into issues running such a long+heavy barrel from an ar15 upper?

I hope you realize that this is a Top shelf match grade barrel BLANK! You have to cut the chamber/threads and muzzle crown. You cut it at the length you want. ;)

What barrel contours should I be looking at? I was initially looking for something heavy, around 1" diameter at the the business end or should I be considering

around .75"?

I'm not sure anyone makes a 1" gas block..... So that's something to consider.

I was able to source a Kreiger AR heavy profile barrel from JuanValdez (north shore barrels, site sponsor). Iirc the barrel is .75" at the muzzle.86" under the gas block...... Barrel came with everything (threaded muzzle, drilled gas port, barrel extension) but not chambered, so I had the local smith chamber it for me. By the time I bought the barrel and paid for the g-smith, it was just shy of $600, then the upper, gas block, fore-end, BCG......

In the end I'm happy with upper, im currently in the process of sourcing parts to build a dedicated lower for the upper....

Just order a prechambered(wylde) kreiger varmint, contour and or cut it down, free float it, buy a good match trigger and you will have an upper that shoots better than any factory upper.Dont worry about the actual receiver and other parts. They don't matter much.
