I'm working on a light weight build and trying to decide on a barrel.
A pencil barrel from Maple Ridge Armory would be the one I consider. Can they take the heat? anyone have experience, good or bad with pencil barrels this length?

The build also includes a LW BCG, adjustable gas block, and a 15" hand guard, barrel will get a brake too.

Thanks

My only experience with pencil barrel is with the 14.5" old C8. You went thru 2 magazines (full cap) with it and grouping would open to produce worst than SKS size grouping.

It al' depends of what your intention are with this build

How much heat are you thinking. With the neutered Canadian mag laws, how much heat does a barrel need to take?

Thats a very good point.
I guess the most I do in a day out in the bush is about 4-500 rounds messing around.

Wanting to do the light weight option because my wife can't hold my SLR and shoot without resting the hand guard on something. She's very dainty but loves shooting.

And it's good for me when I walk 5 hours in the bush with camping gear, anything to lighten the load helps.

Faxon makes a pencil profile 20 inch. If you were hellbent on the 18.6 you can have it chopped and recrowned... or just run that.

Norinco 20” from Can am. Have a smith cut and thread. They’re cold forged apparently.

If you look hard enough or if you are patient, you will eventually come across an 18.5 Norc barrel but if you need a barrel right away, like robab had mentioned the 20" might not be a bad option for 1/4 of the price of a Maple Ridge. I personally would spend $99 over $399 unless I am buying a match grade barrel. Don't knock the Norc's or rather Dominion Arms which is what Can Am has them marked as!?! They have two advantages over the Maple Ridge which is they are inexpensive and they are chromed lined which helps with heat and longevity.

If you have to buy Canadian, BCL is about 1/3 cheaper and having used both Maple Ridge and BCL in builds, initial testing is that BCL is more accurate. Those are just my findings and I am talking specifically about just the barrels and not about any other products.
