Take a crayon and mark the tops of all the bolts, and try to close the forearm, reopen and check for crayon marks on the barrel...to me it looks like the very front bolt is causing all the problems.

Been there, done that.

The screws are the culprits. Originals have been stripped out of the stock and replaced with over size screws.

How to fix is the dilemma?

Had the same problem with a Savage model 24. Ended up drilling the stripped stock holes bigger, filling with epoxy and re-drilling. Once that was done, properly sized screws fixed the issue.

I ain't a smith, so take this advise with a grain of salt:p

Were the screws over tightened or was there a washer or shim behind the screws? If the bracket is sitting too low in the forearm the wood might cause interference and prevent the latch from closing, try loosing the screws a couple of turns and see if it latches.

Front screw looks too long. Doesn't take much to stop proper fitting. On my gun, wood has always touched the bottom barrel. Don't file the hook, please.

By looking at your internal picture of the forend, the cocking latch at the rear end appears to be broken off. I think you need a complete new forend iron. You can deal with the screw issue by shimming under the new forend iron if necessary. Gun will not #### with that forend iron as it needs that piece to push the cocking rods back in the receiver when the gun is opened.
 
Take the wood off the hardware , put the screws back in the iron and latch to barrel and see what happens? Work or not? that front screw looks to proud of the iron, to me take it out of the wood and try that.
I just looked at Dee's post and he could be right, don't look right, I have not seen one of these guns for years.
