I am coming to the conclusion that the old tried and true stack of a single large ball over one single layer of heavy buckshot in a smoothbore, is the way to go. Don't try anything really different of you'll just be wasting black powder & range/cleaning time folks. This span of years covers early American manuals only. Supect the British, French & Dutch were already well aware of it's limited formula/capabilities for several decades or even more perhaps.
This with my 10 gauge SxS BP cartridge shotgun.
