I have an original Remington New Army .44 cal revolver that was given to me for christmas. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out when it was made as there seems to be little serial number info on the internet. The serial number is 72115. From the searching I have done it looks to me like it was made in 1863. It has a us government inspection stamp on the grip so it could have seen civil war action. Any help would be great!

Greetings-What a thoughtful gift! Flayderman info is approx. 106,000 made for military use and show inspectors cartouche and about 15,000 in civilian issue. I have ser# 71288 as a New Jersey militia purchase in 1864 so yours is just a tad later. Buffalo Bill had ser#73293 purchased in 1865 so you are in between. Enjoy the piece. Cheers

Your revolver was not made in 1863 but rather in

May 1864 serial Numbers 69761-75950

This was taken from my copy of "Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861-1888" By Donald L. Ware
He is considered the foremost authority on Remington revolvers
Hope this helps.

Your revolver and Buffalo Bill's were all made in the month of May of 1864. Buffalo Bill may have purchased one in 1865 but it was made the same month as yours and the original poster. That's pretty cool.

I joined the Remington Society Forum regarding the dating of my New Model Army revolver.

Mike Strietbeck’s comment.

NMA serial number 107274---manufacturing date info requested.

During October 1864, E. Remington & Sons shipped 4000 NMA revolvers to the U.S. Government against their contract of November 21, 1863. The serial number of your revolver, 107274, falls in the range of this production lot.

This Remington has a very nice OWA cartouche on the left grip---for Orville W. Ainsworth.
