Don: According to the serial number, your Colt(if original) appears to have been manufactured in the latter part of 1861. Serial number ranges for 1861 started at #2000 . 1862 manufacture started at serial # 25000.
Nearest reference I could find to your Colt was serial # 20257, which was shipped to its owner(LTC G.D. Ramsay. Washington D.C.), on December 10, 1861.
