1885 winchester opinions

Haven't had a 1885 but had a B78 for years in 22-250 and selling was the biggest regret I've had as far as parting with a rifle, it was without a doubt the most accurate rifle I have ever owned would consistently shoot pretty much any bullet 40-55 grns into .25 for five shots. 70 grain speers opened up to about .75. A much nicer action than the Ruger #1 IMO. I see the guy I sold it to frequently and he always assures me that he won't sell it back to me. I have heard a lot of guys praise the accuracy of their B78's and 1885's.

I would pretty much sell my left nut and risk divorce to get my mitts on one chambered in .405 Winchester. There is a youtube vid out there of a guy shooting one and it makes me so friggen jealous.

I really like the older Browning Low Wall version. They were a little over 6 lbs and very compact, even though they had a 24" barrel. One of those in .260 Rem would make for a pretty sweet little rig.

I've wanted an original '85 for years but never actually got my hands on one, mostly due to them being hard to find and I always spent my money on another old Winchester. Just can't hold on to $$ when there are old Winchesters around to tempt me.

The most accurate factory-built sporting rifle I own bar none is a Browning 1885 in .270 Winchester. It will print 3 shots into under a 1/2" at 100 yards with boring regularity. Last Saturday I managed a 3/8" 3 shot group at 210 yards. :)

sounds like a ringing endorsement. i will have to get one. hope its as good as you guys say, and i don't get a lemon

I just bought a new one in 38-55, haven't even seen it yet. I hope it's all the hype says it is. Bought it specifically for lead bullet target shooting, my 45-110 1874 sharps is just too abusive for a whole day of targets. Guess I'm getting old !!

I like them. I had one in .270 that was extremely accurate. I own a couple of the BPCR models now, one in .45-70 and one in .50-90. I've been thinking of getting one in .38-55 but haven't made up my mind yet. They are good rifles but I wish the triggers were lighter.

Chris.
