Hi, I am looking at buying an 1886 takedown winchester in 33 W.C.F. The gun has the well worn light brown patina of the blueing, and the bore and rest of the gun is in good shape and original but for the front blade does not look original. It comes with dies, two boxes of shells, one remington amd one winchester dating from about the 30's and 10 handloads. The serial # is
136###. I searched but could not find the year of manufacture. Anyone care to venture a ballpark value and date of manufacture? Thanks!

The rifle is not in my posession and I have no photo's of it. Well worn blueing, no rust, the wood is decent with no big dings and no cracks. The take-down barrel fits tight and the action seems tight and smooth.

As little as a $1000......as much as $2500++ ??? As you may know condition is everything.

But I'd expect to pay about $1500ish for a "shooter" and I would most likely by two at that price ;)

But you seriously need pics for a better guestimate.

Thankyou both, for the date and the ballpark figure. The asking price is 1200.00 and after looking at a couple comparable ones on gunbroker it seems they were asking more money for rifles in considerably worse condition. I think I will have to add this one to my collection. (though I don't consider myself a collector rather an owner, does that make sense? Just love owning and shooting and hunting with guns - this one would go hunting!)

Well from the description I'd say it's a good buy.....the boxes of ammo(as you know is very collectable) is worth a dollar or two as well, dies a bonus ;)

Add to that the 33 WCF is just a great classic hunting round !
Have Fun with that fine 86, it was meant to Hunt

A fair price if the gun is in decent shape. Gunbroker prices are out to lunch and American prices have little in common with Canadian, generally being much higher. Searching the EE is a better way to find the going price for guns here.

You're probably aware that the 33 brass is too valuable to shoot. Get some 45-70 and run it through the dies for just 'shooting'.

Why would .33 Win. brass be to valuable to shoot? Unless it's unfired, pre 1960 production and the box is original and in great shape, I would bang away with it.

The 33WCF was discontinued in 1940. Don't shoot the ammo, save it. I happened to inherit a rifle the same as the one you're looking at and they are a real beauty to shoot. I reloaded reformed 45-70 cases and have had a lot of fun with this rifle. I will hunt with it this Fall.
