At the Neepawa gun show, a fellow asked to research his old rifle for him. I did what I could, but without my magic digital microscope, I couldn't make out all the markings.

Here's what I could determine:

The rifle appears to have originally been a MLM or Magazine, Lee METFORD Mk II, 1894. It was then converted by V.S.M. (Vickers & Sons and Maxim) in 1911 to CLLE I (Charger Loading, Lee Enfield), having been re-barreled to Enfield rifling at some point.

If that's not enough to straighten your hair, it was then sporterized by B.S.A., with Marble's rear sight and Christy front sight installed, charger bridge removed, and probably had the volley sights removed either at that time, or some time before. The magazine cut-off disc is also gone. Since its renovation by B.S.A., it has also been refinished and re blued at least once.

The old girl certainly has a trail of history attached to it. In its current state, it isn't a hot collector item, but does present itself in good appearance.

Edit: a few pics of the markings

Classy indeed! And guess what? The fellow traded it to me today! I have to have a go at the bore to try and clean it up. The old rifle caused quite a stir at the Neepawa show.

How was the show?? Sadly I had to miss it, I'm behind on my yard work and only have 1/2 my garden planted.

Very nice gun, that's the fun of gun shows stuff like that can often walk right in through the door!!

It was a good show, especially for their first one. It was freezing in the rink for the first couple of hours as they couldn't round up the person who knew how to run the heaters. Had lots of fun and, of course, heard some good stories.

You are right about the good stuff that walks in. I have the strange feeling I may have bought more than I sold. Somehow, I had two or three guns more than cases at the end of the show! Hmm. :p
