Got to the range with the 45-70 shooting 420 grain cast bullets.:) I got a respectable 1.5 inch group at 185 yards. This was the first load worked up with this bullet weight and it seems to be working out so far.:D The cast bullets were done up by a local shooter here on Vancouver Island.

Rifle - 1895 Marlin 45-70
Scope- 4x Banner
Barrel length- 22 inches
Bullet- cast 420 GC Doug Green Bullets
Charge- 41 grains IMR 4198
Primer- Federal Large Rifle

I am going to put in for a bison draw like I have for 100 years already and see if I get one and then I can try out the big bullets.

good shooting 303!!.....the best i have had with my 420 craters is 1-1.5 inch at 100 yards with h322..HMMM?

i have tried imr4198 but group size was up to 3" at 100 yards......my load for the 4198 was as follows:

420 grain JB young craters
winny brass 2.095
oal 2.520
fed 210 primers
lfc 2/3 turn
41.5 grain avg about 1733 fps from a marlin 18.5 inch guide gun....i may have to go back and try that powder again?!!??....can you give us anymore info on those bullets?....thanks ...larry:)

45-70 bullets

I have been doing a lot of internet research about cast bullets and the information is contrary to the common beliefs of alot of todays shooters. Meaning that today its shoot the hardest cast possible and push it as fast as possible resulting in loss of accuracy and increased barrel leading. When this happens many believe that the cast bullets are too soft and they push for harder alloys. A lot of the oldtimers are saying that if you slow down the bullets to between trapdoor max loads and max Marlin loads this combination gives the best accuracy and penetration. In todays age of magnumitus its hard to get people to believe that faster is not the best. Another topic was to cast bullets about the hardness of quenched wheel weights with a gas check along with slower velocity results in better accuracy and deeper penetration without bullet fragmentation as is what happens to superhard cast bullets. Maybe the oldtimers that shoot buffalo with a trapdoor Springfield and heavy bullets doing about 1400 fps are onto something and in the 45-70 maybe newer and faster isn't the best.PS todays target was 1&3/8 inch at 185 yards

Does Doug Green sell to the masses?
Oh ya, any idea on your velocity? And is your rifle microgroove or ballard rifleing....

45-70 velocity

One of the cast books I looked at today said to expect 1770 fps with the load I done up in my Marlin. Oh by the way , thanks to Riflechair for selling me this boomer, John:)

Okay, since the discussion is "big boomers at a distance", here's a group (approx. 2") I shot several years ago with my 1895 Marlin - the distance was 200 yards, shot off the bench with 350 grain Hornady RN bullets in front of an upper-end load of Reloder 7 (using a 1-4x Leupold scope). Definitely a bit better than "minute of moose". :)

Another testament to "big long bullets going slow". :D

Hey 303carbine, looks like the 420grGC cast bullets are really working out for you.:D When I told you about Doug's bullets, did I mention he also casts another bullet with the same profile as the 420gr, except that its a little lighter, 325gr's. A load using 43grs of IMR 4198 for 1867f/sec on that scan I sent you may also give pretty good results. We'll have to go out and have a '45-70 day', I'd love to see groups like & see that 'big boy' shoot.:)
