A friend gave me a sweet 1995 mauser 7x57 as a retirement present. All original and in apparent
excepting a full length manliccher type walnut stock. I fired a few round of blue box
At the range and it performed well as expected with no pressure signs on brass nor bolt tightness. Should it
Handle hotter loads working up with the usual precautions?
The rifle is stamped ‘Mauser Cheleano 1895, Manufactura Lowe Berlin’. Serial no
A568x.

Well, if it is marked "Loewe" it is pre 1897 when Loewe was rolled into DWM. The Chilean 1895 does have the "safety shoulder" behind the bolt handle.

Just how strong the pre Model 98 Mauser rifles are is up for debate, but considering that the rifle is 125 years old, I'd use standard 7x57 loads.

Thanks Mig. The metallurgy could be suspect due to its age I take it? Its a very well balanced
unit and I’ll can reserve it for factory fodder. 7x57 has been
my favorite caliber since 1981 and I have 4 others chambered in it for which
I hand load.

They are well made. The only relative weakness is in the gas handling department, compared to the later 96 and 98 actions. Given the age of the gun, I'd stick to loads that are at least 2-3 grains below book max. Bear in mind that commercial brass displays a substantial variation in case volume, which can affect pressure.

Thanks for this; Ill stay well under maximum loads.
My go to bullets are nosler partition 14Os for the cooper
And ruger 7x57s - would a heaver projectile be a better
Choice for this rifle, given its origin?

They have long throats, and can easily take 175 grain bullets. Mine likes the 150 grain range, but I should point out that it was rebarrelled at some point in its life.
