1895 Winchester

Good Day All

Been looking around in my gunroom and thinking I may sell some stuff, the first one I am thinking about is a 1895 Winchester, all original the only thing is that the bottom of the butt stock has a hole in it for a sling stud, no cracks in the wood just the normal marks from use. The Cal is 303 british and the bore appears dark but lots of rifling a good scubbing may help. What is a fair price for the 95's when you look there is a lot of differences in prices. Not great pictures but give a ball park of the condition

The shotgun does have nice wood on it and also has a odd opening system with a thumb release in the trigger guard, the double flint is a cape gun a 28 bore rifle on one side and a 18 bore shotgun on the other side, and the gun above is a Greener 4 bore, but back to the 95 did some cleaning on the bore and not saying it will be shinny new but it will certinaly shoot and ammo is easy. I should take it out and try it maybe I will not want to sell it then

I think a 95 in .303 with 28 inch barrel in decent shape should be a $600 to $700 rifle in Canada. Dark bores sometimes clean up nice. Seems to have a lot of blue on the barrel. The 1895 is probably the least desirable to a collector, prices are a lot lower compared to the 1886, 1892 and older 1894's.
 
I think old JB was totally bored when he designed that gun! With such a complicated action AND complicated top loading on a gun designed for the military - it's no wonder no one but the Russians bought it!!! Have one only to "round out" my Winchester collection - fortunately its in 30-40 Krag - probably the most popular caliber ( next to Teddy Roosevelt's .405 "Big Stick)! Its butt heavy, long, not comfortable to carry and more recoil/muzzle jump for a rifle that size. The old joke "his girlfriend may LIKE HIM, his Wife may put up WITH HIM, but only his Mother could actually LOVE HIM" certainly applies to this old Winnie!! Sorry if it sounds negative!
 
My brother in-law has one that is in 30-06 .. I thought they were worth more... His came from his father so it is not a money thing anyway..
But I just thought it would have been worth more
 
The only 1895 that seems to generate much interest outside of hard core collectors seems to be the .405 Winchester. Some of the 95s chambered in .30/06 develop excessive headspace due to locking lugs setting back, the 95 action was not originally designed for .30/06 pressures. That plus the fact that the .30/06 as loaded for the past 60 years or better is somewhat hotter than the original 1906 loading. The original loading was more comparable to the .300 Savage power wise.

A Lee Enfield .303 with its simplistic action and 10 round detachable mag beats the 95 every which way especially if used in harsh Northern Canada. My reference to the desirability of 30-40 Krag only because that is the BEST and only one of the three ORIGINAL CALIBERS still reasonably available/useful since the 38-72 Win and 40-72 Win have long since faded into oblivion! Having said all the nasty stuff about it - the 95 is worth having simply to admire the complexity of design, the fine and complex machining required for its production compared to the "crap" that is being manufactured today and being passed off as "high quality craftsmanship". And yes I admit I am an "original FUDD" and thankful for the opportunity to have spent my whole life working with these old "masterpieces". For my $$$ I'd sooner spend $1500 on a 95 in ANY caliber than ANY new off rack gun being produced today. Why? In 30 years -that $1500 bolt action will be "just another gun" in the pile leaning in the corner of a gunsmith's shop somewhere BUT the 1895 will be a cherished classic of the best gun maker in the world!!!
 
Was hoping it was worth more then $500, that will not go very far on the next item I am purchasing, as superted says it may as while stay in the gun room for some more years as it should go up and I do like the older guns. Been cleaning the bore and i think it is going to be okay, maybe I will have to start liking lever action rifles and try this one out

It is worth more than $500 just a matter of finding a guy who fancies the model 95 Winchester. I have seen several in like condition go for around $700 but not much more.
