1895 winchester

Is it an original 1895 rifle? If so, rebarreling will ruin its value. You'll want to look into the cost and local availabilty of ammo first too. Shooter's Choice, in Ontario, wants $49.95 for 20 pieces of brass alone.

Hornady sells factory loaded ammo and brass. The 30-40 Krag is same brass just shorter and necked down.Harold

Destroy the value of a collectors piece? rebarrelling would reduce the value by 80% at least. By puting a .405 barrel on it and it not being an original .405...you would never recoup the cost of the barrel...the collector will run the serial number and be able to tell the original state from the factory....Just shoot it as it is and enjoy...original is where the value is... I was going to rebarrel a 1894- 38-55 rifle but at the cost of over $600.... over and above the cost of the rifle itself....?????

Get the new barrel cut to the same contour as the original and retain the old barrel. If it really has collectors value you can switch again and put the piece of crap back on. Collectors don't really care or seem to know the difference judging on what they try to peddle at gun shows. . I get a little tired of people trying to convince you your beater with the shot out bore is a collector's piece. It's your rifle to do with as you want whether or not you are concerned about resale. S@#w 'em.

Jim..
The 405 is rimmed case...If the rifle is a 303 or 30-40 you might be able to convert to 405 with out changing the lifter, extractor etc....If the rifle is chambered for a rimless case there may be problems converting to a 405 without changing the internals...A gunsmith familiar with the 1895 would be able to tell you...Here in B.C. I would suggest Jennings (250)-577-3247 or Wilcox (250)-547-6480... For Alberta there is a gunsmith in the southern part I believe that could do your work...Can't remember his name correctly but my best guess is David Henry Clay...the mind is going Jim...ole fartdom ya know:redface:
What is the rifle chambered for now?

.405 Win

Tks Stocker and nrut for the help and support . I simply asked for info not a lecture . It's good to see there's still folks out there with a positive attitude not negative . FYI the rifle was given to me to destroy due the extremely poor condition . The barrel has been sawed off to 20" and is bent with no sign of rifling left once the rust removed , the sights have been attempted to be migged back on , with broken and missing action parts . So for those who don't appreciate my attempt to salvage a piece of history , to bad .

jim: Can i call you junktion? I'm with you on that one, the .405 is a legend in the '95, once you get the .40 cal barrel, you'll have to find someone with the .405 Reamer or buy one yourself...min. $100, barrel $400, gunsmithing min. $200, are you still there Junktion?.........Junktion?....

You didn't explain that on your first post, so don't be surprised at the response by Sunray, I was thinking the same thing myself.
An original 95 in decent shape is reasonably rare.

Restoring a junker, or Bubba'd rifle helps keep them alive, so thank you.

1895 405

I do my own work metal and wood, I'm a retired tool and diemaker/gunsmith and have built several custom firearms and have rebarreled many others.
I'm basically computr illiterate and haven't tried to post any pics on GN but I'll be glad to send anyone pics if they send me their email adress.
