Hi, I bought a carcano for 100 bucks. Nice gun, made in 1899. It seems to have very shallow rifling though, was the rifling from that era shallow, or is it just the 109 years of use the rifle has seen?

6.5x52 was a smokeless cartridge from the onset. The M91 used deep, progressive or gain twist rifling. Yours sounds like it's worn. Give it a good clean then check it again.

If you're reloading Hornady makes their 160gr 6.5 in .266 dia as well for MS and Carcanos.........do you have any of the clips?...........Harold you can paper patch .264 up to bore size

There is a parallel thread about 7.62x39 reamers and rebarreling Lee Enfields, and the Carcano is mentioned as a suitable basis also. The bolt face is compatable, and just about all you need to do is change the barrel to something in .311 cal (like a rechambered rethreaded Pattern 1914 takeoff ).

Would they feed through the en-block clips? A .300 savage SS might be cheaper with a cheap takeoff barrel in .30 cal?...........Harold *******the stamped one piece Savage 340 mt fits the Carcano perfectly

Just give it a good cleaning. If you don't have an electric bore cleaner, do a google search for instructions on how to make one. It took me ten minutes once I had all the components ready, which were under $20.

There's a good chance that the rifling is buried under a century of copper and lead fouling, and an EBC is the best way to get it out. Failing that, try gunslick foaming bore cleaner, and give it a few applications.

Let us know how it turns out.

i can remember not to long ago, a surplus store in southern alberta had them by the 45 gal barrel. you could buy 1 or all at 10.00$ ea. there was 3 barrels full, and they were there for a long long time
