I have a NS /nickle steel bolt 1903 Springfield sporter in a higher serial # so action should be good for modern loads. It has a sporter hinged floorplate plastic/aluminum and a Redfield adjustable peep mounted. It came with a Sile stock that is too splintered to use.The barrel on it is 30-06 that appears to be a military one turned down to sporter contour.Nice looking clean bore.Boyds has stocks but I'm wondering about what other take-off barrels may be fitted. Can a 98 mauser sporter barrel be installed ? I read about the pre 64 model 70 style cone breech so that may be a PITA.The barrel on it has a couple large noticeable index marks from whatever it was taken off prior I'd like to either hide or get lathed off maybe set the barrel back? Not sure if I want to leave the peep on or simply D+T for a scope like a G+H sporter? Suggestions or ideas welcome.

Yes I saw those but they are military for restorations and this is beyond that so a nice functional sporter it will be at some point.I'll have to get a smith to inspect the currant barrel to see if there is enough meat on it to clean it up and go from there.A Zasteva 98 sporter barrel in 06 may also work scoped.Could just use it as a backup rifle as is with a new stock.

I think you will find that the Springfield barrel thread is larger in diameter than the 98 Mauser barrel thread.

The 1903 is 1.040 Major thread, and .990 (De Haas) or .940 (Machinery Handbook) with 10 square threads per inch.

The 98 Mauser is 1.10 Major thread, with 12 V threads per inch. However, if the Mauser barrel is a heavier one, then the threads can be cut off, the barrel threaded for the Springfield, and rechambered.
