I would really like to purchase a 1903 in the near future. I have been offered a pretty good deal on an 1942 Remington 1903. It is an all matching in good shape rifle. I am told it is a super Remington 1903. I know there are different versions, but not sure of a super Remington. I really like the Springfield brand (that's why I own 3 Springfield Garands) and was leaning towards an early year Springfield 1903 possibly with a Pederson cut-out. So, I know it is personal preference, but what rifle would you want to buy and why?

Thanks for any feedback.

I've owned or own all makes of M1903s incl Springfield, Rock Island and Remington. All passed military acceptance checks and, all things being equal, all are capable of the same degree of accuracy. The Remington M1903s were made under the press of WW2 needs and do tend to be a bit rougher than the others in terms of cosmetics. Excepting the early "low number" rifles, the best ones for fit and finish were the Springfield M1903s made between WW1 and WW2.

Pay close attention to the bore condition as a lot of them are quite worn and rough as a result of firing a lot of wartime corrosive ammo. BTW, there is no such thing as a "super Remington" M1903. There are Remington M1903s, 03-A3s and 03-A4 sniper rifles, but that's it.

Springfield in 1942 was not a brand name. It was a U.S. government owned factory.
Like purple says, there's no such thing as a 'super Remington' anything. The '03's they made under contract were only made in 1941 and 42. They made 4 groove and 2 groove barrels too. Serial number range is here. Add the W's. .vishooter.net/ra_serialization.txt
The 1903A3 is a Remington designed improved '03. S/N's above. Rear sight moved and improved and a stamped parts vs milled to easer manufacturing. '03's were made by Remington and Smith Corona. The latter are increasingly rare. Only made 236,831 between Dec. of 1942 and Feb. of 1944. They run around $1300ish US, Stateside.
Finding any 1903 or 'A3 in decent condition, in Canada, is a challenge. Been looking for 40ish years and have seen exactly one.
An 'A4, only made by Remington, came with no iron sights, uses a Redfield scope base, shoots like hot dam and run over 3 grand US. Lots of fake 'A4's out there too. One way of telling a fake is the S/N location and range.

Thanks for the information. Very much appreciated.
I will most likely be going through the US and using an importer. Much better choice of rifles south of the 49th, but with the dollar tanking, I might have to wait awhile now. If I have to spend close to $2500 (all in including import fees, taxes and delivery), then it better be a damn nice rifle.

If you are going to spend a lot of $$$ for an original condition Remington rifle, make sure that it has Remington parts, most of which are marked with the letter "R". See "An Illustrated Guide to The '03 Springfield Service Rifle" by Bruce N. Canfield for more info.
