I recently came into possession of this rifle that is stamped with Arabic numbers and writing so I wasn`t sure what caliber it was. After posting on other threads I got enough feedback to determine it was probably a 7.65x53. Last week I went to our local gunshow in St. Catharines,ON and picked up 2 boxes of ammo. 1 box is marked FM"SF" 7.65-65 and is in great condition. Despite the 7.65-65 mark it cycles through the gun perfectly and I feel confident in firing this. The 2nd box is a mix of 3 different shells. 5 are marked FYA 1929 HP and are clean looking. 11 are marked FMMAP 1947 SF and a few were turning green. I cleaned them up with a metal polish but there is some pitting in the brass. 4 are marked Norma 7.65 ARG and in good shape. My question is am I safe to fire this stuff and if so is any of it corrosive?

The fact that a round chambers perfectly means the chamber is the same as the ammo - or larger. A 243 will chamber nicley in a 308 and a 3006, for example.

Stick the buellet end into the muzzle. Does it almost fit, or go right in? (latter would suggest 8mm)

I checked the bullet in the muzzle and it doesn`t quite go in all the way so I think 7.65 is the correct caliber. Thanks for the heads up on a potential problem. Back to my concerns about firing this stuff. Do you guys think it`s safe and if so is it corrosive stuff I`ve got here?

I think you need to investigate your rifle a bit more before firing that 7.65 ammo in it.

After reading this post I did your test with three different 8mm k98 mausers and some FN 7.65 surplus.

The bullets will not quite go down all the way into the muzzle in 2 out of the 3 rifles. I then removed the firing pin from the bolt, & the rounds cycle through the action, probably because of the controlled feed on the mauser action, even though the shoulder on the 7.65 is shorter than on the 8mm.

Does your rifle have a scallop cut out at the top rear of the reciever ring? That could be another indication of the conversion to 8mm.
